Do you like cliffhangers?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of do, but not if they are too easily resolved (it takes two minutes for whatever issue there was in the next season premiere and then they move on to something else). And of course, there's ending the series on a cliffhanger, which actually can work (it greatly depends on the series itself), but usually is really frustrating.

I like them so long as they'll be resolved quickly. When it comes to cliffhangers in endings of a series, it depends on which genre the series is in. I'm okay with horror and mystery ending of a cliffhanger but hate it when it occurs in fantasy or sci-fi.

Yeah, it seems fitting with some horror and mystery. Sometimes I'm okay with it in an action-heavy series if it implies the characters will go on to have more adventures.

I like them in books at the end of a chapter because I can just keep reading, but I don't like it if I have to wait or if I never find out what happens.

hate them with a passion

Almost ruined Alita.

Alita was saved by being so very packed story wise, and there not really being a better place to end the film.

Too many series are padded with books that don't really do anything but fill space, and end with a cliffhanger to sell the next book. So the road to the cliff better not be filler if you want me to keep going.

You know, I feel like a real putz for not thinking of this earlier but when I do think about it, I can actually tell you THE biggest problem with cliffhangers...

Nope. Not a fan. I'm not a big fan of surprises in general.

I love them if it's the actual, real ending of somthing. I don't like them if it's just a midway point (end to a chapter, season, whatever).

I don't find them frustrating. I usually fill in the blanks myself a lot anyway when consuming media, and the more blanks there are, the more I tend to enjoy it. Especially for things where the writing isn't the absolute best. (for example, the HP epilogue. What I imagined was better than that dumpster fire.)

In theory, I kind of love season finale cliffhangers. They've got that old school flavor of pining frantically for your show to come back in the fall, all "Buffy killed Angel and then she RAN AWAY TO LOS ANGELES, omg omg omg!" or all, "HoW DiD MuLdEr EsCaPe ThE BuRnInG BoX CaR ThO?!!!"

However, in reality cliffhangers tend to end up feeling cheap once the next season rolls around and the writers do a bunch of hand-waving or back-peddling to deal with the ramifications of the cliffhanger as perfunctorily as possible.

What I long for is cliffhangers that have ramifications the show ends up dealing with, in depth, for a big chunk of the next season. So basically, strong storytelling, lol.

I feel like maybe the Good Wife was pretty good at this - they would end with something that would raise eyebrows and then when it picked back up again, it would be an actual game-changer and push the series in a different direction than it had been going (generally in a good way).

The resolution has to make sense and not be a cop out. I'm with Annie Wilkes on this one.
