I don’t have it on hand, but I remember seeing an article about plans for a Highlander reboot. The writers were having a really hard time leaving it open for a sequel without contradicting “there can only be one.” I found myself wondering why they needed to leave it open for a sequel at all.

Well, they managed to make sequels of the original despite the movie not leaving an opening to do so (they were pretty terrible, but that's arguably a separate issue).

I loved the television series (well, except how the last part), so I'd prefer they reboot that rather than the movie. As I agree that the movie if done well really shouldn't leave room for a sequel, but there is lots more that can be played around with for a show.

For the most part, I can't stand sequels. I can think of a few exceptions but there's just this tendency to undo all the earned growth from previous movies.

Yes. Thank you. Especially since sequels seem to rewind all this character growth and progress. Same with reboots.

Star Wars reboot, looking at you.

What if the sequels are planned? On the other hand, all I can think of right now are franchises that stretch what stretch things put for money at the expense of quality.

I used to think sequels were a good thing. Then a few of my childhood favorite books got sequels and I hated all of them, so now I'm not such a big fan of sequels.

Depends on the movie. I love sequels when they work. I love big universes. But on the other hand, some movies don't need sequels (Edge of Tomorrow for example).

Audience: We do not want any sequels or reboots, give us something new!

Hollywood: maybe this new A thing?

Audience: (doesn't even look at it)...mech, not really what we meant.

Hollywood:...and what about this B thing?

Audience: (does not move an inch) Try making it look interesting, will you?

Hollywood: Will think about it. In the mean time, how about Marvel Movie no. 123?

Audience: YEAH! (runs towards theatres) But remember, we want original stuff.

Hollywood:....ok? (goes away to plot Marvel Movie Clone, because that's easier than trying to gues what can draw people away from scrolling through their instagram feeds).
