I don’t have it on hand, but I remember seeing an article about plans for a Highlander reboot. The writers were having a really hard time leaving it open for a sequel without contradicting “there can only be one.” I found myself wondering why they needed to leave it open for a sequel at all.

Well, they managed to make sequels of the original despite the movie not leaving an opening to do so (they were pretty terrible, but that's arguably a separate issue).

I loved the television series (well, except how the last part), so I'd prefer they reboot that rather than the movie. As I agree that the movie if done well really shouldn't leave room for a sequel, but there is lots more that can be played around with for a show.
