I disagree, while the series was founded in Japan, I think a mixed race lead represents the international nature of Pokémon best. It's a world wide phenomenon that's big on trading and interconnectivity after all.

Mixed Japanese would've been perfect though. Por que no los dos?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely, but considering the heavy stigmata mixed Japanese people face in their home country, I have some unfavorable assumptions on why that option wasn't taken.

If that's the concern, was mixed-black any better in terms of perception in Japan?

I do get what you're trying to say, but yeah...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably since it's easier to dismiss as a foreigner thing

True, there's always the whole gaijin thing. Now I kinda wish it had been mixed Japanese/black just to piss off the racists.

NOT implying all Japanese people are racist, they aren't - I mean the racists among them, lol.

Would you feel the same if it was an African series given a mixed race Japanese lead?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
If it was a huge international phenomenon with dedicated fans all over the world including Japan, sure.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. Pokemon belongs to everyone.
