On one hand, I know your heart is in the right place. Asian minorities in Western countries are pretty invisible in mainstream media compared to other groups and I 100% agree a Japanese lead or sublead in that movie would've been great to see.

On the other hand,
*Japanese character
*Japanese property
there's no such thing as an Asian property... Pokemon didn't emerge out of the entire Asian region. If we're gonna pay homage to the origins of Pokemon, it should be a Japanese character. "Any ol' Asian All Look Same" runs the risk of being racist in a whole other way. And putting in an Indian lead because it's "an Asian property" wouldn't be the same, would it?

Don't get me wrong, I totally get where you're coming from. Just wanted to point that out.

I'm glad they didn't take the easy way out and just cast some up and coming white guy, and I liked Justice in the role, but I was thinking the same thing....A Japanese lead would have been great and more fitting.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Isn't a fairly important character played by a Japanese actor?

He gets 5, maybe 7 minutes of screentime.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree, while the series was founded in Japan, I think a mixed race lead represents the international nature of Pokémon best. It's a world wide phenomenon that's big on trading and interconnectivity after all.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Mixed Japanese would've been perfect though. Por que no los dos?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely, but considering the heavy stigmata mixed Japanese people face in their home country, I have some unfavorable assumptions on why that option wasn't taken.

Would you feel the same if it was an African series given a mixed race Japanese lead?

I agree with this. Pokemon belongs to everyone.

unrelated sidebar, it's cute that 'pika' is part of this image text considering the secret lol

I swear, only Americans care about this stuff. Literally every single time Americans have gotten up in arms about someone in Hollywood StEaLiNg PaRtS fRoM jApAnEsE pEoPlE or appropriating Japanese culture or whatever, actual Japanese people living in Japan are like "Oh, cool. :O" See: Ghost in the Shell, that Avril Lavigne music video, Isle of Dogs, etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah screw Asian-Americans who cares what they think?

Well, Europeans aren't really in great shape to tell minorities to shut up and erase opportunity for representation, either...

Anyway, there's a world of difference between cultural appropriation and representation. Asian people are underrepresented in the West. They deserve representation outside of Asia.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Add me to your new list of "Asians who care about this shit and get angry about it".

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree to some extent, I wish Ken Watanabe's role had at least been bigger - he was featured in the trailer so made you think he'd do a bit more. It would've been neat to have a Japanese actor in the lead role, since young East Asian men are so underrepresented in leading Hollywood roles. Justice did such a great job, though, and I appreciated the diversity represented in the film - Pokemon belongs to the imaginations of kids (and adults!) all over the globe, and it was kind of cool to see an "interracial" young man in the lead.

(scare quotes because I don't know if Justice Smith is interracial, but his role in the movie is, which was pretty neat.)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I think that instead of sitting around waiting for representation we should try non-english and non-american media for a change. At least the lead isn't played by a white guy, which is the lowest bar to clear.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Detective Pikachu is a loose adaptation of a video game with a decisively non-Japanese setting and lead though. Why would a character named Tim Goodman (even in the Japanese version) be Japanese?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Then he should be white then by your logic.

...Given everything around it, I thought it was located in California or something close??? Making it decidedly American, since they've moved from Japan. Or do you think a Kalos movie should feature a Japanese lead?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently there are no Japanese immigrants living in California.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
*Japanese

Asians are not all the same, and many even hate each other. In Japan the biggest racism is against other Asians (especially Chinese and Korean).

(Anonymous) 2019-05-22 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
He may not be the protagonist, but one of the only five (nine if you count nonspeaking Pokemon) recurring characters in the movie is portrayed by the Japanese actor Ken Watanabe if it makes you feel any better.
