Too much inbreeding in the Lannister line. Same thing happened with the Pharaohs. Brothers and sisters reproducing causes some fucked up people down the family line.

That would apply to Cersei's children but I didn't think the Lannisters as a whole were inbred.

Not sure, but that's not QUITE as bad as brothers and sisters, which is what the Targs did.

Even if they were first cousins, you'd need several consecutive generations of first cousin marriages without any outcrossing to actually see the effects of incest.
