If this anything like what happened with How I Met Your Mother. Like, they had decided how it was going to end at some point but when character arc and story swept past where they really needed to start angling for it, they sort of disregarded that and figured fans would understand and go along with them. So, instead of it being a culmination of story arcs and character arcs building on each other, everything got all twisted around or discarded just so they could get to that ending they had decided on.

I heard the theory that GRR Martin had told them what he was planning for the end but like in bullet point/cliffsnotes format and they just didn't bother fleshing it out properly.
