Getting Your Teeth Pulled

(Anonymous) 2019-05-21 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to the dentist tomorrow, and might get my wisdom teeth pulled. My mouth is too small for them to come in properly, and it hurts like a bitch to eat... I'm a little nervous since I'm seeing a new dentist, after having bad experiences with that dentist in the past;;

How many of you still have your extra teeth, or have had teeth pulled in the past? What are good things to do and eat afterwards?

Soft foods are good - stuff like soup or pudding that you won't have to chew. Depending on how quickly you heal, you'll probably want to eat those for at least two or three days, then slowly introduce more solid foods. Do not drink anything through a straw for at least the first 24 hours, preferably the first 48, because the suction can fuck up your clotting and make you susceptible to some pretty unpleasant infection in the socket. Stay away from anything with sharp edges or that's very crumbly for the first week or so, because even if your jaw's not sore it'll irritate the incisions.

If your jaw's swollen and sore, put ice on it - 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off will help. Avoid the temptation to put heat on it, because heat is inflammatory.

I'll have to look up some good soup recipes, thanks! Didn't know about the straws being bad for it either, do there goes my plans for buying an icee on the way home;;

I had my wisdom teeth pulled last summer! In my case, it was only the top two - all my wisdom teeth are apparently pretty small, like my mouth in general, but the bottom two never grew in at all so they pulled the top.

So I didn't even get put under, they just novacaine'd me. It wasn't an awful lot of fun for that reason, but they did the deed and sent me home. In my case, ibuprofen was mostly enough to manage pain (they didn't give me anything extra). I had to keep cotton in my mouth for awhile after because I bled a lot. Luckily, I took the day off of work and then had the weekend after to recover - I definitely recommend giving yourself a few days if possible.

I bought groceries in preparation beforehand - ready made soup from a carton that was easy to eat up (tomato and black bean soup, nothing with any chunks of anything), tapioca pudding, and yogurt, mostly. DON'T use a straw for the first week or so, even if you're only eating liquids. Your jaw will be sore, but use a spoon and don't make any sucking/suctioning movements.

I was pretty paranoid for awhile about getting things stuck in the holes so I ate very carefully, but I probably overdid it a little. First day, only liquids (you'll probably be sore anyway and won't be inclined to chew) and then just only eat things that will "dissolve" without getting stuck in your mouth, while chewing carefully.

I have no magic tricks though. Just try to set up everything at home before the appointment so you can get back and take it easy. If your dentist doesn't give you stronger pills, make sure you have plenty of painkillers. Get lots of soup and ice cream, and plan to just spoil yourself on your couch the next day or two. :D

Ouch, that must have really sucked;; I've never been put under before, but I was considering it this time. I'll probably be the same level of paranoid tbh, but it's better than getting infected or irritating the wounds that's for sure. I'm hoping they'll give me something for the pain, but I'll be sure to stock up just in case.
Spoiling myself sounds good, and so does that black bean soup! Thanks!

I only have my baby teeth somewhere. I forgot to ask for my wisdom teeth and was too drugged up afterwards to remember.

Stick to soft foods - soup, jello, mashed potatoes, etc. Your face might swell up, so it's not a bad idea to have some ice packs on hand.

Thanks! Mashed potatoes are pretty much my favourite food, so I'll definitely be eating a lot of those!

My wisdom teeth never came in. I never had an x-ray of my mouth done so I don't know if they are just hanging out under my gums or I never had them at all.

I consider myself incredibly lucky because every single member of my family had to had them extracted and, in the case of my aunt, the doctor had to cut the sides of her mouth a little bit because it was too small and he didn't have the room to operate. She healed pretty well but if you know to look for it you can still see a faint silvery line on both corners of her mouth.

Really? Damn, I really hope that's not the case for me. I can barely stand it when I get splits on my lips... I guess I'll find out tomorrow;;

I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled cos they were impacted and would've fucked up my mouth. I ate a lot of avocado and soups and smoothies. Just stick to something soft that you enjoy. But my recommendation is to thoroughly wash out the site of where your teeth were pulled, i got a bit of avocado stuck on the site and it hurt like a BITCH!

I remember when they pulled my wisdom teeth from the right side (the pain was unbereable) the dentist said to eat soft food like pudding and soup. Also to not open my mouth and to sleep with my head slightly up to let the wound properly heal. Also resting for at least three days, since you basically have surgery.

Overall is not that bad. The anesthesia makes everything bearable. Good luck, OP!

Had all four pulled when I was in college (so a couple of decades ago). They put me out completely and I had a somewhat common reaction to whatever it is they used in that I started crying when I woke up (I didn't know it was a thing at the time so it was really confusing because I had no idea why I was crying). Three were extracted fairly easily, but one broke and that and getting it out caused a hell of a bruise on my lower left jaw. The extractions themselves leave very tender holes just behind your molars that will be very sensitive to anything touching them. They gave me this syringe thing to help clean them out (there's a curved plastic tube at the end so it can be angled to squirt water with enough force to move anything that gets stuck in there). There was a fair amount of drooling on my part the first day. Pudding and jello were pretty much all I ate the first couple of days (anything too hot or too cold wasn't good at first). Now, I would think the protein shakes and nutritional supplement drinks would work pretty well.

I advise not going overboard with the "I can have all the ice cream I want!" thing. I tried that after having oral surgery once and very quickly felt really grotty from all the sugar. Have some proper foods that are soft on hand (soup, mashed potato, avocado, and overcooked pasta are good). Check whether you can only have cold things initially.

Hey! I had all my wisdom teeth removed surgically under anaesthesia when I was about thirteen years old. My mouth was too small also. I had braces too, and the wisdom teeth would've interfered with talking, chewing, biting, cut up the insides of my cheeks. I looked like a chipmunk after removal. I ate a lot of yogurt, scrambled eggs, smushed up meatballs, et cetera.
I also had to get 4 other teeth removed so I have a total of 24 adult teeth in my mouth. My mouth is too damn narrow!
