Not everything you write will please everyone and that's okay!

Oh lol, I recently came across a blog post where an author had responded to a bad review with basically the writer version of that "you little shit I'm a navy SEAL and I've killed a hundred men" copypasta. It just went ON and ON and ON. It was funny to start off, then it was sad, then it swung back around to being funny.

Eh.

Are we drawing a distinction between reviews on someplace like Goodreads - which really is dedicated to potential readers - and comments on fic, that will go directly to the author?

Because I'm fine with negative words in the first, but shit, when I put something up on AO3 I'd rather not have some stranger giving me an itemised list of everything they didn't like about my hobby project, which they read for free.

TBH, I've read comments to see if a fanfic sounds like something I'd like to read or not, and an overly high squee content is more likely to make me dismiss the story out of hand as mediocre glurge than think it's worth my time.

And there's been enough author!wank on goodreads to know that they read 'em.
