How is Nia a Mary Sue? She is a MAIN CHARACTER; the MAIN HEROINE at that. She obviously has presence and importance to the narrative. Please, stop just blatantly trolling while saying "SHE IS A MARY SUEEEE, BAAAAW" and please try to make a point.

Also, you're blind if you thought she did nothing to help Simon. She understood his feelings and gave him a PURPOSE. She taught him it's completely fine to run away, that it's fine to feel fear and that HE IS JUST A HUMAN.

HUR DUR forgot the secret number.

[identity profile] sono-cat.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay... I feel the need to step in and say this. And I say it as someone who loves Nia to death and cries just THINKING about what happened to her.

SJust because she is a main character, does not mean she's not a sue. She has sue qualities. Especially when she first shows up. She gets better but she does have a lot of sue qualities.

Yes she helped Simon. Yes she is the only reason he was able to recover from losing Kamina. But don't be in such denial. =/

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The term Mary Sue is completely WORTHLESS when it comes to canonical characters. Characters that go from Mushishi's Ginko to Kenshin in RK could be considered Sues if we considered Nia a Sue.

It's a term that will never work in anime and manga. Nor in classic mythology. Or in movies. OR IN ANYTHING.

[identity profile] willfully.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a Mary Sue has nothing to do with being a canon character. It has to do with the character's personality, whether they have flaws or not, whether they are an emotional, fleshed out character with, you know, some humanity.

There are plenty of books, shows, movies, etc. with main, canon characters that are Sue-ish.

And not that it matters, but I'm not making any judgment about Nia, I don't even know who she is. :|

(Anonymous) 2008-09-26 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Mary Sue is a word that means nothing. If they want to talk about the character personality... why won't they just talk about the character personality? Why use meaningless terms that ultimately mean nothing like "Mary Sue"?

People that use the term "Mary Sue" in the first place are lazy. Lazy and rabid.

[identity profile] sono-cat.livejournal.com 2008-09-26 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
=/ Okay. Okay listen.. So if I were to publish a comic with a TOTAL SUE as the main character it wouldn't apply because she was in a published comic? No. No sweetheart that's not how it works.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-26 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Please read the rest of the conversation. Perhaps then you're going to understand.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Now, I don't even know what canon this is so maybe you're right, maybe secret maker is right. I don't know. Hell, I don't even care because I'm never going to watch whatever it is. But being the main character doesn't exactly mean you can't be a sue. In fact, it sort of RAISES the chances.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A Sue is a self-insert. Nothing more.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I SELF INSERT is a self insert.

All self inserts are sues. Not all sues are self inserts.

Not like that EVEN MATTERS, as a canonical character could just as easily be a self insert as a fanfiction character.

Except for the fact that the writer is male. And Nia fits the 80's just like Kamina fits the 70's. And she is perfectly justified by the narrative. The term Mary Sue is dead, worthless and right now lacks any kind of meaning.

Feel free to keep using a word that doesn't really say anything if you want, but you'll just keep digging yourself further within your own lack of language.
ext_81845: penelope, my art/character (huh?)

You're right. He is kinda wrong. For me it was kinda...

Kamina = Super Robot Hero
Nia = Bubbly Shoujo Heroine

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched this anime, but a character can be a Sue even if it's a main character. Does she make other characters act illogical and unlike themselves (within the universe and common sense)? Does she defy canon laws? Does the flaws she has only make people love her more? Do people in general love her for no apparent reason?

If several of these things are true, she's probably a Mary Sue.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
She is an idealistic but very absent-minded girl that is called a Sue because she has cloud-hair and flower-eyes. She never broke suspension of disbelief, not at any point of the show. People just resent her because she was introduced right after the major bishounen in the show died and became the romantic interest of the main character, who despite being the source of hate or apathy for everyone in the story at that point people loved to pair with the now dead bishounen.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That doesn't tell me much about her in relation to the laws of canon or the other characters' reactions, which is how Mary Sues are determined. Why does she have flower-eyes and cloud-hair? Does her absent-mindedness ever get her in trouble? How and why did she become the romantic interest of the main character?

(Dude, I've seen Pictures of this Kamina character; that's not a bishonen.)

In any case, introducing a new character to take the place of a hugely popular one is bound to make people a bit unwilling to accept her. Yeah, it's unfair, but if she really is a good character, the sane fans tend to get over it sooner or later.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
She has cloud-hair and flower-eyes because she was genetically modified to fit her father's desires. She was supposed to be only a doll for him to play and her destiny was to die when he was tired of her. The show is too fast paced for her absent-mindedness to ever have any effect in the narrative, though. It is a very clear character flaw that other characters have to overcome in order to interact with her, though. What gets her in trouble it's actually her idealism, actually. Regardless, she became Simon's(MC) love interest because she became infatuated by his passion and love, she likes his down-to-earth nature. He came to enjoy her company because she was the first gentle and kind person he had ever met, she listened to all of his troubles and he just enjoyed spending quiet time with her. Simon is a socially awkward character without much initiative, so Nia gave him a purpose. They came to love each other because they overcame their demons together. That's basically it.

Oh, and most of the fandom loves her. She is probably among the 4 more popular characters. But as you can notice from the OP, the more "raging" fans of over-genralization don't like to think while watching the show.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that doesn't sound like a Mary Sue at all, but a well-developed character.

My usual complaints tend to be that characters fall in love without knowing each other, or even interacting very much. Nia and Simon seem to have a properly built relationship.

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-09-26 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the anon you were responding to before or the OP, but I think the reason many people don't like Nia is because they felt the relationship between her and Simon was a bit forced. Yes, they had a lot of development, but from the moment she showed up it was obvious that she was clearly intended to be the love interest. That might be where the Mary-Sue accusation comes from, even if it is not 100%accurate.

Re: 105

(Anonymous) 2008-09-26 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, from the oldest conceptual Gurren-Lagann art you could tell Nia was the main heroine. Hell, in the magazine summary published in 2006 at the announcement of the project they even called Nia "a young girl called Nia introduced late in the story, set to be a major main character and Simon's love interest".

She was designed before Viral and Kittan and Genome and the Anti-Spiral existed, even!

Still, if she's clearly a plot robot... though I feel a bit silly discussing this, since I haven't seen a single episode, haha.

Re: 105

That's not even very fair. From the moment Eureka appeared in Eureka Seven it was obvious she was going to be the romantic interest. From the moment Ai appeared in Planetes it was obvious she was going to be the romantic interest.

I believe the one reason some fangirls will never forgive her is basically taking over Kamina's place as Simon's "love interest" and killing all dreams they could have of a YAOIBUTTSEX relationship between them.

This. Seriously. I'm so fucking sick of those types of fangirls hating so hard on perfectly well-developed female characters, slinging around terms like "Mary-Sue" and much worse than that, just because they have vaginas, their vaginas like penises, and MY GOD, THOSE PENISES LIKE VAGINAS.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but just because someone doesn't share the same opinion as you doesn't mean that they're "blatantly" trolling.
