It's fine as you do it in a way that makes sense. Either keep time travel strictly limited, or aggressively refuse to try to be realistic about it. The problem comes when you have time travel without many restrictions *and* the specific mechanics of time travel are important to the resolution of the story.

Yeah, time travel can be a great mechanic, but it needs to either have strict rules or everyone gets to go wild on it, not just conveniently the heroes (Legends of Tomorrow is a great example of this).

The creators also need to be internally consistent, and they usually are not. It's frustrating.

I think the time travel in the Mortal Kombat reboots turned out pretty well, all things considered. There’s the idea that the same events keep happening over and over, and then it brings up the question of why they’re so apparently immutable.

I stopped watching The Flash because they kept going back to that well. I still think the initial time travel on the show was fine, but couldn't handle the writers trying it over and over again.

The repeated (and poorly executed, imho) use of time travel was one of the reasons I gave up on that show too. It wasn’t the only reason, but it was a major factor. And given the spoilers I’ve seen about this last season...? No regrets.

DA - Same. I got so sick of all of Barry's villains being people he hasn't actually pissed off yet, to say nothing of learning, again, that you shouldn't mess with time (and meanwhile the Legends are doing...pretty much nothing but that)

Forever bitter about S3 of the Flash. Forever.

Same. Add to sad parallel worlds and I'm lost.

Are those Game of Thrones characters falling through time with Cap and Hulk?

I am pretty sure the last time travel story I really liked was Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Speaking of embracing the goofiness.

Hear hear! This is the reason I have no desire to see Endgame. I have completely given up on the franchise now, "time travel" is all I needed to hear.

I love how in the film they talk about how Back to the Future is inconsistent with time travel theory, which to me is ironic, because Back to the Future has the most streamlined and easy to follow time travel rules, whereas Endgame is confusing as fuck and doesn't actually work, if you really think about it.

So they're saying their future will be the past if they go back in time. But to me that makes no sense. They're in effect saying things must always happen the way they happen for them to have their future(past). But time travel itself already changes these things! The best example was Loki stealing the tesseract precisely because they go back in time and messing things up for them.

Back to the Future works because the idea of changing the past creating an alternate timeline makes complete sense. Ie if the Avengers had gone to New York 2012 and taken the two infinity stones then and then found a way to destroy them then a new alternate timeline would be created where Thanos wouldn't be able to do the snap. (The future would also be different but you could go with the Star Trek alternate reality rules- the Avengers will always come together ie Wanda because of 'destiny'.)

The time travel aspect was the most interesting part of the film and could have been brilliant, if done well ie; maybe they have to keep going back because they keep stuffing up the future or some such thing.

Endgame dunking on BTTF get funnier and funnier to me the more I see people not getting there is now a 2014 without Thanos and there's a 2012 with Loki free and running around with the Tesseract etc. So many people seem to think Steve going back was some massive reset button so obviously the writing wasn't as clear as the film congratulated itself for.

But the writers and directors also seem to disagree on their own fucking rules so I wish they'd both stop talking now.

Oh good gods alive, I agree with this.

It pains me that I cannot like and re-tweet this.

I LOVE time travel in all its variants, but it should always be internally consistent. And often... that doesn't happen.
