Him going back made perfect sense to me.

They were twins who had a fucked-up co-dependent relationship, and he knew he'd regret it for the rest of his life if he let her die alone.

Then why did he sleep with Brienne? It didn't make sense from a character-development and from a story standpoint to have him have his arch of change and then suddenly go back to Cersei. Admittedly he left her a lot later in the show than in the books. But still, they had him sleep with Brienne and be with her this season. And suddenly he's back with Cersei. Was part and parcel of how rushed season 8 was and how little sense it made.

Because when he's with her he's a better person and forgets what shitty person he is; and most shitty people will do almost anything to forget how shitty they are.

And knowing his sister was almost certain to die, and soon, was like a bucket of cold water getting thrown in his face, waking him up from the dream of being a noble knight and husband to Brienne. Deep down he knew he didn't deserve that kind of happiness. He knew he deserved the same fate as Cersei. In the end, he couldn't forgive himself, so he had to leave and die with the one person who truly deserved him, shittiness and all.

If that's what they were going for, then I fundamentally don't believe that they did enough to sell it. At least not for me. And clearly I'm not alone considering how divisive the final is and how many fans didn't like it. If it worked for you, great. It didn't work for me.

Then again, I might be giving the writers more credit than they deserve; they could have made Jaime run back to Cersei because it "rhymed" or some other non-sense.

I think Jaime's actions were obvious to me because I'm someone who carries a ton of guilt like he does, and I've given the nature of my guilt and how it affects my life a lot of thought.

Anyway, I'll leave this quote here because I think it explains Jaime's choices better than I ever could:

“If you begin to regret, you’ll dull your future decisions and let others make your choices for you. All that’s left for you then is to die. Nobody can foretell the outcome. Each decision you make holds meaning only by affecting your next decision.” – Erwin Smith, Attack On Titan
