I agree with you, it's not like the rest of the movie was realistic. Why not?

........but it's based on real people, so the happy stuff...actually happened.

IIRC, Rogers & Hammerstein made things look a lot more cheery-happy-looking than things actually were.

(not saying it was some kind of hellhouse or anything but I'm pretty sure they interviewed some of the kids as adults who pointed out that Julie Andrews Maria von Trapp was not.

It seems that the complications added to make the movie more dramatic never actually happened, so - other than Maria having bad (but quick) temper....
It was actually pretty happy.

TSOM has never really struck me as unrealistically happy. Maria is very much an optimist, and her optimism affects everyone she comes into contact with. But the movie overall isn't overwhelmingly happy.
