Re: Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make...
(Anonymous) 2019-05-26 05:02 am (UTC)(link)For one thing if you agree that people have the right to make money for their writing, then it doesn't matter how you make money for writing, except that some ways are more practical for different people than others. People back in the day obviously couldn't use Patreon or Ko-Fi to do so, since they didn't exist, but they would have had the right to do so if they wanted to.
I mean, if your point was exclusively that making money off copyrighted content was wrong, I could understand that. I don't totally agree - for one thing, I don't think you can have different rules for fan writers making money off copyrighted content than you do for other kinds of creators, like fan artists. But when it comes to the method people use to get that money - I mean, who cares? If using Patreon makes more sense for someone, good for them. Whether that's because they can't get published (it's not like you can just snap your fingers), or because they just think Patreon makes the most sense for them, that's their decision. I don't see what the distinction is between Patreon and published fic - I mean, people can also get paid for original fic through Patreon, if they want to.
And I think that, when you make up these arbitrary rules, and you don't really provide any reason for those rules, and they don't really apply to different kinds of fan creators, and you're really aggressive and dismissive about it, and turn it into a decision about who Deserves money and who doesn't, then yeah, I can see how people think that's disrespectful of writers in general.
