Re: Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make...

If you think that you have the right to ask for money because you're writing fanfiction and that people who think you don't have the right

1) see zero worth in the art of writing,
2) are spitting on every writer under the sun, and therefore
3) are invalidating you specifically as a person,

you're being ridiculous. What did people do before websites like Patreon or Ko-fi existed? Hell, what did they do before the internet existed and brought fanfiction readers and writers together? Guess they all sat in a dark corner of their room, sadly dreaming of the day they can exchange a drabble for a cup of coffee because they dared not try their hand at original fiction until they became writing masters after training for years through fanfiction.

There's a couple things that don't really make sense to me here.

For one thing if you agree that people have the right to make money for their writing, then it doesn't matter how you make money for writing, except that some ways are more practical for different people than others. People back in the day obviously couldn't use Patreon or Ko-Fi to do so, since they didn't exist, but they would have had the right to do so if they wanted to.

I mean, if your point was exclusively that making money off copyrighted content was wrong, I could understand that. I don't totally agree - for one thing, I don't think you can have different rules for fan writers making money off copyrighted content than you do for other kinds of creators, like fan artists. But when it comes to the method people use to get that money - I mean, who cares? If using Patreon makes more sense for someone, good for them. Whether that's because they can't get published (it's not like you can just snap your fingers), or because they just think Patreon makes the most sense for them, that's their decision. I don't see what the distinction is between Patreon and published fic - I mean, people can also get paid for original fic through Patreon, if they want to.

And I think that, when you make up these arbitrary rules, and you don't really provide any reason for those rules, and they don't really apply to different kinds of fan creators, and you're really aggressive and dismissive about it, and turn it into a decision about who Deserves money and who doesn't, then yeah, I can see how people think that's disrespectful of writers in general.

The people who most ardently believe you don't have that right are the copyright holders of the source materials, because they need to protect their meal tickets. The rest are fans who are (not incorrectly) concerned that allowing fanfic writers to openly solicit payments will eventually lead to aforementioned copyright holders and their lawyers bringing their wrath down upon all fanfiction altogether.

It's nothing about you as a person, so get over yourself. Everyone only cares about how it will affect them.

If the point is that you shouldn't make money off of material derived from copyright, then there's two things that don't make sense to me.

One, do you make the same objection to fan artists who make money off of copyright violations? Two, why does OP have all this stuff talking about KoFi and Patreon versus traditionally published work, when that has nothing at all to do with original work versus copyrighted work? It's totally unrelated and weird.
