Tohru is the most boring part of Fruits Basket. I don't even hate her, she honestly makes me laugh and smile. But the show is so focused on her when the Sohma family drama is infinitely more interesting. Likewise, Yuki and Kyo's personal stories are at their most compelling when Tohru isn't in the picture.

S!B Fruits Basket was written as a teenage romantic fantasy where the dopey, uncool outcast girl wins the affections of the school's mysterious school prince(s), who proceed to obsess over her and use her as an object of self-betterment and character development.

I agree that she's boring... At her best times. At her worst times she's annoying, and I do hate her. I can't look at her as wish fulfillment even though that's what she's supposed to be. I can't imagine any real girl watching her and thinking "Oh yes, she's so much like me!" She's nothing like anyone. Nobody can be that good and happy and nice after suffering so much.

I hate Momiji for the same reasons, but at least he's not the main character. Everyone else is cool and deserves to be in a better show.

I like Momiji because I think that kind of character does fine as a background object rather than someone whom the narrative revolves around. But Tohru just dulls the story down. I'm sure this is unpopular but I'd prefer the story were a straight-up drama and turned down the comedy/romance. Yuki dealing with the abuse he faced as a kid, Kyo facing isolation and dealing with the literal threat of being locked up by Akito when he turns 18 (how is that plot point just brushed aside?!).. those things are just way more interesting than who Tohru decides she wants to bone more. Plus, the animal transformations would've been so much cooler if they weren't just a byproduct of opposite-gender cooties.

I have mixed feelings about Tohru. I picked up the manga when I was very young and had a lot of issues going on in my life, so I tried to emulate Tohru ‘cause I thought modifying my behavior would make people at least tolerate me and maybe even like me. Turns out that shit doesn’t work in real life and it didn’t even really work for Tohru since most of her blood relatives were assholes to her. I went from wanting to be her, to hating her, to feeling indifferent, and then kinda liking her again by the end. I’m still not sure how I feel about her, but I don’t hate her anymore.

TBH the point of Tohru is she starts boring but gets more interesting, we see her sweet facade begin to break down and she grows as a person, too. We get plenty of Sohma family drama, too, so IDK.
