Focus on stereotypes not people?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, I'll agree that going after individual creators and readers is a waste of time. I'd say that death of the reader goes hand in hand with death of the author.

But there should be some room to criticize stereotypes of queer men's masculinity and femininity as they appear in works.

The issue is, I see very little actual discussion about harmful stereotypes and a lot more discourse about things like being outraged that 'this person draws Keith from VLD too pretty and that's stereotyping gay men that they have to be feminine' or got mad because people were calling him beautiful.

...even though the creators themselves said his design was based off of female characters.

Really, most of what's going on in fandom right now is about shipwars and not liking certain content.

And honestly, I'm much more concerned about mainstream portrayals of gay characters than what's in some sexy slash fic on AO3.

Sure, I fully agree that cloaking shipwars in social justice language isn't doing us any favors either.

I very much agree.
