Do not worry, my dear anon. Said people have dropped the "male" part and just outright shame slash fans whether they asked for it or not (spoiler: no one asks to be bashed and/or be guilt-tripped for the things they enjoy because they are that, things they simply enjoy. If they are not causing any real harm to irl people they should be left alone).

TIL that stereotypes and the rigid adherence to homophobic ones are harmless.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
you're one of those people that thinks literally everyone switches and there's no such thing as a top or a bottom aren't you

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Such people exist. There is little point fighting about fictional characters' preference.

I'm without such preference myself but I am sure it happens. There are women who don't enjoy receiving oral sex, too, but they aren't commonly found in fanfic smut. One can only speculate why this is.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there was any implication of that in what was said, the discussion is over the fact that nowadays just being a woman who likes mlm content (especially anything erotic in nature) will immediately get you called out as someone who is fetishizing gay men, no matter what.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

But there are also people who do fetishize gay men, so just dismissing any criticisms as women-hating doesn't seem reasonable either

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Having a dog as a pet is very normal and common. It's only a problem if your dog attacks people."

"B-but some pet dogs DO attack people! Are you really trying to normalize dog-owning?!"

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sure it happens, but personally 99% of the time I have seen people whipping out this claim it's over ships they don't like involving fictional characters or content they don't like, having nothing to do with real life gay men at all.

And the word fetishizing has lost it's originally meaning as well, now typically being used to mean 'find a particular thing attractive.' Finding gay men and relationships appealing and attractive does not automatically mean you are fetishizing them.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
TIL it's woke to claim that a ship being slash makes it a rigid adherence to homophobic stereotypes.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt but that's not even a little what they said

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Dahli: "If they are not causing harm to real people (when they ship slash)--"
That anon: "So you're saying homophobic stereotypes don't cause harm to real people?!"

I think you and I are talking about two very different things that happen to overlap.

My comment (albeit snappy, I was really irritated at the time and apologize if I came off as rude and insensitive) was about how being in slash fandom tends to get you under constant attack if you enjoy slash in any way or form.

And what I meant with "If they are not causing any real harm to irl people they should be left alone" is that, as long as that person enjoys said slash and keep separate their fiction from reality and not doing any harm to others (bullying, shoving their views on somebody else, etc.), then they should not be bullied for it.

That said, it doesn't make what you're implying less valid.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking this, exactly. There are just as many women yelling about how being a fujoshi makes you a horrible, gross individual at this point. One artist who draws for a ship I like (two anime boys) always adds the text 'fujoshi don't reblog' under the piece.

I absolutely hate this current trend in fandom now where people think it's all right to shame others for what turns them on, even if they are literally doing everything they can to stay within their own 18+ space with it. The level of guilt they are trying to evoke for feeling perfectly natural things is honestly horrifying to me.

They're just Not Like Those Other Girls!

Oh lord, yes it's awful. I've seen it not only coming from women but from men as well (men who happen to be either homophobic, ship a straight couple and get angry because the slash pairing gets in the way or is more popular than the pairing the ship or something else).

The trend of fandom policing has been a thing since forever but Imo it really has gotten out of control as of late. Maybe because it has become a trend in fandom? Maybe because it has become more acceptable to police what others like?

Although the comments up there had me thinking about a lot of things about fetishization (not only of gay people but people in general) and sexuality. But that will be a meta essay for another day.

Focus on stereotypes not people?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, I'll agree that going after individual creators and readers is a waste of time. I'd say that death of the reader goes hand in hand with death of the author.

But there should be some room to criticize stereotypes of queer men's masculinity and femininity as they appear in works.

Re: Focus on stereotypes not people?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
The issue is, I see very little actual discussion about harmful stereotypes and a lot more discourse about things like being outraged that 'this person draws Keith from VLD too pretty and that's stereotyping gay men that they have to be feminine' or got mad because people were calling him beautiful.

...even though the creators themselves said his design was based off of female characters.

Really, most of what's going on in fandom right now is about shipwars and not liking certain content.

And honestly, I'm much more concerned about mainstream portrayals of gay characters than what's in some sexy slash fic on AO3.

Sure, I fully agree that cloaking shipwars in social justice language isn't doing us any favors either.

I very much agree.
