Re: What did you do today, FS?

Worked, ran over something on the interstate and had my tire explode, waited for AAA to come change it (I was actually on the way to get new tires when it happened, I'm just glad it happened before getting new tires and not after), walked around the area for a bit (they said it would take a few hours so I had time to kill), realized I hadn't eaten yet today and grabbed some food at a nearby restaurant, then went back to the tire place and played around on my phone and waited a couple more hours. Then once it was finally done, I went and got new windshield wipers (today was my errand day since I knew I was getting off early). Now I'm home and showered and getting ready to go watch some TV before (hopefully) getting to bed at a decent hour since I have to work early tomorrow.

Simon <3 Hero cat of the Amethyst. May he long be remembered.

I couldn't even read the poem about the horse - and neither could the owner of a museum devoted to WW1 near where I live. He just pointed to it and said, "No, I can't read that one."

If it helps, the official order of looking-after in the British Army in WW1 was horses first, then men, then officers. I remember seeing a programme on WW1 in which the horses from a particular house came through the war with their owners, against all odds. The owners took them back to their home after it was all over - and the horses put up their ears and headed straight for their old stables. A lovely story.

The Dexter finale, the Lost finale and various books that I thought had a lot of potential but just...never lived up to it.

Wasn't there a robot bomb-disposal unit in Afghanistan that someone risked his life to bring out? The squad had got very attached to this one unit which had saved them several times before.

Oh, wow.
I think I'm going to cry, now.

Lovely.

The Revenant. What a let down. Leo Dicaprio was the least interesting character in that movie.

Bioshock 2. It was just so boring compared to the first one AND Infinite.

"Nailed It!" has been a phrase longer than it's been a show

I hear you. I stopped playing during Legion (right after they ruined Kil'jaeden :p), but even then Sylvanas was already nearly drained of nuance.

Then again, this is pretty much the dartboard they seem to have used for the creation of female NPCs for a while now.

It helps me that the contestants usually look like they’re having in and they’re aware that they are shit at baking... so I don’t feel too bad. It feels all in good fun. The prize money seems steep though.

Final Movie Club Remainder!

The polling is done and Logan Lucky has won! I have links to some alternative streaming places on my dreamwidth. It is streaming on Amazon Prime and kanopy! So, check to see if your local library participates in that program!

We will discuss the movie June 1st. I hope to see you all there.

okay but the whole ~it's a commentary~ thing seems to be based on the idea that people aren't sad enough about Real! People! Dying!, even when they didn't know them at all

if you're just talking about "the affect they had on your life" then there's no reason why human celebrities and animal celebrities should have some kind of moral hierarchy. grumpy cat also had an effect on many people's lives!

you can mourn *when* they die, you can be sad, but you said it yourself, it's about you, it's not about mourning them

Recently? The Goldfinch. It's my best friend's favorite book of all time, and one of my co-workers got excited when she saw I was reading it. I'm floundering around page 100. I just cannot. It's all sound and fury to me.

Work. Got emailed at 8 and asked to do a hearing at 1. Then at 11 got told we had an asylum case that the file was due tomorrow. Plus there was another file I was working on. Had to cancel Spanish class and didn't eat lunch until 3.

Then I led part of my Toastmasters meeting. Also still preparing for teaching on Saturday.

Finally home and all I want to do is sleep.

Unfortunately, I am at a conference all day (and teaching part of it). I hope to be able to join in the discussion later, though.

Yeah, the canon doesn't need to come up with some kind of alternative explanation, canon can just flat out ignore whatever it is for ever after. Easy peasy.

This is what I've always done in the MCU. Civil War never happened. Huge chunks of Ultron never happened. And now only parts of Endgame happened.

The biggest disappointment would have to be the second X-Files movie. I was OBSESSED with TXF at the time, and the excitement and build-up in the fandom was intense. And then the movie was, imo, terrible. Which I probably should've seen coming a mile away, but we were all so hopeful that they'd come back and nail it, after the not-great final seasons.

Freaked out because I got a new computer at work and today was the day I finally switched over fully, but and New Windows is very different from old Windows and nothing is where I think it is and everything looks like shit and it takes more steps to do everything. Outlook used to look so nice and now it looks like I'm on a Yahoo message board from 15 years ago. Acrobat looks like it was re-designed to appeal to toddlers, and yet it is somehow harder to use than before. I can't even put my finger on what's bugging me so much about Word but I hate the way it looks now. HATE.

Also: STOP CALLING EVERYTHING AN APP, JUST CALL IT A PROGRAM, GOD!

I'll get used to it, but there were nearly tears.

I had fallen out of the fandom by then, so the second movie crept up on me. I didn't think it was good, but I hadn't had a chance to form any expectations. I figured they had a low budget to stick to.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly surprised that large parts of MCU fandom has so little ability to do this - surely they can learn from comics fandom where it's the only way to maintain any kind of character continuity at all?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
This, I think, was the thing that finally broke through the absolute wall of salt and rage that my friend was going through over Endgame. As a longtime Trek fan, I was able to tell her about all the shit that fandom just like... collectively deleted, lmao. Sub Rosa? That episode doesn't exist. A good chunk of the first and last seasons of DS9? Nope, doesn't exist. Nemesis? Does not fucking exist.

This isn't a denial thing, either, it's just-- when you have so much canon, as MCU also does, there's no reason on earth why you should have to take every iota of it into account, especially when it's not particularly good or contradicts prior canon in an egregious way. It's fine. Just forget it happened and move on.

Plus, there's always the deus ex machinas you can employ. In Trek's universe, you've always got Q or the Mirror Universe. In MCU, the ending of Endgame opened up the multiverse. So now you've got a full-on canon-based excuse to do whatever the hell you want, lmao. Go nuts!

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. That does explain a lot, colour me relieved;;

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, the bakers never take it hard, though, it's all in good fun. They know they suck at it, and that's fine! Everyone's laughing, and not at them but with them. It's the whole reason that this is my go-to feel-good show. It's so positive and nice, while being hysterically funny.
