??
What is this?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nailed It is a baking show where amateur bakers try and fail to recreate professional recipes

I believe. I haven't watched it myself

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds... odd. Thanks though;;

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 06:01 pm (UTC)(link)
More to the point, it's a show where people who can't bake aren't given nearly enough time to recreate professional recipes, even if they did know how to bake, and fail spectacularly on every level.

It is GLORIOUS. No one takes it seriously, there's no animosity between contestants, and no one expects to even come close to recreating the professional cake.

I was in an absolutely foul mood the other day. The third season of Nailed It dropped on Netflix, I watched almost all of it before bed, and it cheered me right the fuck up. 10/10 would recommend.

Nailed It! Says it in the bottom corner. It is on netflix.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I figured they meant 'nailed it' as in 'good job'... oops.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Nailed It!" has been a phrase longer than it's been a show

(Anonymous) 2019-05-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, unless it's a series-long endeavour with the same contestants getting slowly whittled down (ie you have time to invest in specific people), watching the misshaps and process during the 'making' period of a show will always be more fun than the judging!

It helps me that the contestants usually look like they’re having in and they’re aware that they are shit at baking... so I don’t feel too bad. It feels all in good fun. The prize money seems steep though.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, the bakers never take it hard, though, it's all in good fun. They know they suck at it, and that's fine! Everyone's laughing, and not at them but with them. It's the whole reason that this is my go-to feel-good show. It's so positive and nice, while being hysterically funny.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I love looking at people's self-submitted "nailed it" pictures, but I couldn't make it through a single episode of the show. I was just so annoyed by the idea that they would take a bunch of complete amateurs, give them highly challenging things to make, give them a time limit that would be unworkable for all but the most skilled bakers, and then judge their results at the end. Like, why bother judging? It's orchestrated to make utter failure an all-but certainty.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
They do have a chance to win money though. Have you seen Worst Cooks in America? I don't care for its celebrity chefs, but the contestants actually learn as they go along.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Some of those recipes aren't that challengingnthough. The contestants just always act like total tools who never set foot in a kitchen. They often don't just lack baking skills, they also seem to lack all common sense.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
It is professional level decorating so they are quite challenging.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon who started the thread, and yeah, MTE. Baking cookies or brownies or a cake isn't hard, but as soon as you bring any sort of fancy shaping and/or decorating into it, the difficulty level goes up very steeply. That stuff is a whole lot harder than it looks.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
But they never just mess up the decorating. They regularly mess up the most basic recipes for those cookies or brownies that you mentioned as well.

Have...

Have you met people?

People are shitty at following directions. People are shitty at managing time. People are shitty at doing things they haven't done before, like using a stand mixer or a blast chiller.

+ ten bajillion

I've had people tell me I need to cook with a new ingredient, kitchen device, or recipe -- aaaand come up with something edible in an hour.

So sorry, not sorry -- if the resulting food sucks, it's not my fault, it's yours. I either do my research, or I cook out of my usual culinary repertoire. I can't just pretend everything is going to magically come together in a freaking hour because some naive bozo said it should.

SA

...also, I can't stand it when people automatically assume that one brand or type of any given food is an exact substitute for the next brand or type of food.

For example: canned pasta is not a substitute for fresh, frozen, or dried pasta. They all have different cooking times, and are all suited to different recipes. Dried and frozen pasta has to be boiled, fresh is good for skillet or casserole meals, and canned pasta is good for camping and emergencies.
