They're not kids' movies, though. They're family movies. There's actually a huge difference. These movies are "for" older kids, teens, and adults too-- they're just appropriate for children. So it's a legitimate criticism that the themes and such have all become very same-y.

This is even without touching on the fact that kids aren't stupid and are perfectly capable of understanding and enjoying varied themes, as well as getting bored by the same old thing.

Yes! I came here to say this. They're supposed to be fun for adults to watch too. Kids don't take themselves to the cinema.

...okay, I'm not in any of the places where this debate goes down. What kinds of different themes do people want to see that you're not getting?

When I think about kid-friendly movies being same-y, it's because they all have themes like "friendship is good" and "tell people the truth" and "control your temper" and "don't judge by appearances." Trying to think of a theme that's depressingly absent in spite of being kid-friendly, and nothing's coming to mind.

(except when it's missing because of prejudice, which feels like a separate issue)

This. Objectively, they're all very different movies, they just have similar underlying themes like "friendship is good," etc. like you said, which is what you're going to find in ALL kid-targeted media regardless of the medium. I mean, I look back on the books/cartoons/comic books I loved as a kid and... yeah, they all had those themes too.
