Ye olde haphazard 'it's just a kid's movie' counter criticism. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Kids are the target audience. And kids love repetition. It's a valid point.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's not wrong but it's not really valid either.

I mean, yes, the movies are entertainment products intended to make money by appealing to children. And if you want to say that's all that they are, then it's completely valid to say that it doesn't matter that they're repetitive.

But if you also want to think about them as art, or at least as interesting bits of culture, then I think you have to be open to points of view that aren't centered how much money they make by appealing to their target audience. And that's definitely the way that people do approach Pixar movies.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But the movies the OP is talking about are not even bad. They just have the same general themes.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, yes. It's right up there with:

... it's only fiction
... it's only fanfiction
... it's only popcorn entertainment

as justifications for why nobody can have any legitimate complaints or discussions about a piece of media.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Your complaints and discussions are not immune to criticism. Doesn't mean you can't have them.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a valid criticism. There's plenty to do within the confides of children's entertainment. Letting creators get away with half-assed efforts because kids don't know anything better does no one any favors.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not kids' movies, though. They're family movies. There's actually a huge difference. These movies are "for" older kids, teens, and adults too-- they're just appropriate for children. So it's a legitimate criticism that the themes and such have all become very same-y.

This is even without touching on the fact that kids aren't stupid and are perfectly capable of understanding and enjoying varied themes, as well as getting bored by the same old thing.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-29 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I came here to say this. They're supposed to be fun for adults to watch too. Kids don't take themselves to the cinema.

...okay, I'm not in any of the places where this debate goes down. What kinds of different themes do people want to see that you're not getting?

When I think about kid-friendly movies being same-y, it's because they all have themes like "friendship is good" and "tell people the truth" and "control your temper" and "don't judge by appearances." Trying to think of a theme that's depressingly absent in spite of being kid-friendly, and nothing's coming to mind.

(except when it's missing because of prejudice, which feels like a separate issue)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
This. Objectively, they're all very different movies, they just have similar underlying themes like "friendship is good," etc. like you said, which is what you're going to find in ALL kid-targeted media regardless of the medium. I mean, I look back on the books/cartoons/comic books I loved as a kid and... yeah, they all had those themes too.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Kids are capable of recognizing when something’s repetitive and same-y so the it’s “just for kids” is kinda of an insult to children’s intelligence.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
They are capable of recognizing it to an extent, but less so than adults because they'll inherently have less exposure to repetitive media on account of not having lived as long. They also don't tend to think repetition is a bad thing. Did I know all the Babysitters Club books I read when I was ten had recycled plots? Yep. Were they still fun to read? Yep.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Kids also generally don't care about repetition when they enjoy something. I used to babysit for a kid who wanted to watch the same movie every day for a month straight.

They can totally recognize when things are the same, but a lot of times, they don't care and find comfort in the familiar.

There are books that I've read to my 2-year-old hundreds of times, enough so she has memorized them and can "read" them to me. But she still requests that I read them again. We went to the library today, and we've already read one of the new books six times and another three times.

And having taught preschool for almost 20 years, she is not alone in that. There were many books that would get requested over and over. And the kids would constantly reenact favorite stories through their play. (I was so sick of Frozen!)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I hate that the first criticism for any of the princess movies is that their motivation is "wanting more," like bitch, that's half of movie characters at the start of any character arc, please find something new to complain about

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
So, basically the movies DO suck, but we aren't allowed to criticize them because kids. Kay-o.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"we aren't allowed to"

WTF is stopping you

I don't understand.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
"I can't stand when people complain"

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Not stopping you. But people are allowed to complain about your complaining.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
The repetition is less of an issue if you don't watch all of them in one big gulp. These were released over a period of many years.

I enjoy this movies but after the same plot twist happens for the 10th time it just starts feeling like lazy writting.
