You aren't supporting the individual projects itself, but by supporting things like Crunchyroll etc you're still supporting the industry as a whole (it's not like Crunchyroll doesn't have to pay for their license...), and the import industry at the same time. Without supporting Crunchyroll and Amazon and Funimation and whatever, we go back to the days of illegal pirating and fansubs and Japan treating us all like thieves even though they're the ones who don't want to try giving us legal sources.

To support individual projects you like and want to see more of, yes, official merchandise is the best way--even better: ordered from Japan, sent to a Japanese address, then forwarded out to another country. But as someone who just wants Japan to stop thinking so narrowly and start importing more of their stuff, I'm okay with supporting places like Crunchyroll or whatever the equivalent it is in your country.

(Of course, the irony is that Crunchyroll DID start out as an illegal pirating site, but hey people are allowed growth, so are websites.)
