Crunchyroll bad but how many projects are even out there right now /shrug emoji

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
There's the animator dorm project which is an annual thing and Trigger's patreon.

But what if none of those animator projects interest me? Crunchyroll isn’t ideal, but I like being able to watch a variety of anime. Some I stick with and others I drop after a few episodes. The ones I really love I usually end up purchasing.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Too close to dinner I guess, because I was thinking a "crunchyroll sub" would be pretty damn tasty, if messy (depending on the fillings)...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a BLATANT lie.

https://www.otakujournalist.com/where-your-crunchyroll-dollars-really-go-an-interview-with-the-ceo/

I hear this crap all the time for people trying to justify why they pirate anime and convince themselves that they're morally superior doing it. Total bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That still doesn't change that the animators get peanuts and there's better ways to support them than a crunchyroll sub.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The money literally goes to the anime publishers. The article states that it's additional revenue sources, like ads, that pay for their employees. Not to mention, CR and other sites have legally met demand for anime, support the industry, and increase incentive to bring shows overseas.

It is objectively better to get a Crunchyroll sub than not. By pirating anime, you are simply stealing. Yes, you can get merch also. Buy DVDs, by all means. But don't pirate and pretend Crunchyroll is some kind of scam. That's complete bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-31 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Who on Earth is suggesting pirating here?? That's literally just you railing on about something no one said. The secret itself says to just buy the Blu-Rays. Why are you scolding people?

You might want to take a deep breath and reread the secret. Nowhere does OP advocate pirating. It would be complete bullshit... but it's not bullshit that's actually relevant to THIS secret.

It's far better to export and show direct interest from overseas. No one mentioned piracy but you, ya fuckhead.

Crunchyroll doesn't directly impact profits in the industry, but it's how most Americans get their anime now and if something is on CR, there's a higher chance of them watching a show and buying merchandise. And CR showing which shows are popular does have an impact on anime trends in Japan. It's you who underestimates the anime industry's interest in appealing to foreigners. They're trying. They WANT enough foreign fans that can have an impact, because anime is getting less popular in Japan and more popular overseas.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Crunchyroll literally pays publishers for their titles, so it does impact profits in the industry. OP is completely incorrect on that point.

I'm sort of out of this loop, but I always hope that streaming affects stats which supports a series at least in some indirect way.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-30 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, this is essentially a problem of bad labor practices in the animation industry, and so I'm not sure what the ideal solution even looks like from an American consumer point of view.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-31 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
You aren't supporting the individual projects itself, but by supporting things like Crunchyroll etc you're still supporting the industry as a whole (it's not like Crunchyroll doesn't have to pay for their license...), and the import industry at the same time. Without supporting Crunchyroll and Amazon and Funimation and whatever, we go back to the days of illegal pirating and fansubs and Japan treating us all like thieves even though they're the ones who don't want to try giving us legal sources.

To support individual projects you like and want to see more of, yes, official merchandise is the best way--even better: ordered from Japan, sent to a Japanese address, then forwarded out to another country. But as someone who just wants Japan to stop thinking so narrowly and start importing more of their stuff, I'm okay with supporting places like Crunchyroll or whatever the equivalent it is in your country.

(Of course, the irony is that Crunchyroll DID start out as an illegal pirating site, but hey people are allowed growth, so are websites.)

I agree.

On a related note I hate how many series are doomed to be unpopular if they’re not on Crunchyroll, because even though Crunchyroll has many anime titles under its belt competitors like Netflix are also picking up a couple titles each season. Do I need to keep a spreadsheet of which streaming service to subscribe to if I want to watch every single series I’m curious about legally? That’s such a major pain.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-31 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Not being on Crunchyroll doesn't make a show 'doomed to be unpopular' -- Made in Abyss and Dororo come to mind, both are on Amazon and both are quite popular. Netlix shows are an entirely different animal, if they end up unpopular it's because Netflix is too married to its binge watching model to realize that anime fans want to see the show as it airs in Japan, not three months later, so by the time the shows are actually available legally most of the hype has gone down. Carole & Tuesday probably would have been a big hit this season if it was allowed out of Netflix jail, I've been enjoying it and I've seen some positive chatter on twitter but the fact that you can only watch it via piracy (or wait however many months) is definitely putting a dent in its potential fanbase.

What are you advocating as the alternative?

NO ONE IS ADVOCATING PIRACY

Correct me if I'm wrong but iirc some japanese companies are also starting to stream their own shows on NicoNico too. No subs, of course but it's something.

87% certain most of those are Japanese IP-locked. Now, I'm of the opinion that using a VPN to watch what you shouldn't be able to access is still pirating, but there's certainly some middle ground there and it's not quite the same discussion.

(Personally, I "pirate" radio shows often, because it's that or no access at all. I don't think what I'm doing is right, but I'm just admitting that I do it, too. So.)

Dang, that sucks. I hope they make their stuff available to other countries.

I live in nowheresville and back in the day if you didn't have the right connections you'd get nothing, so I ain't judging here. Amusingly enough, thanks to pirating back in the day people realized there was a huge interest in anime and we got a lot of series on cable, which escalated to getting cons (I remember our first con being like less than 50 people, now it has blown up to the thousands thanks to word of mouth) and we actually get sold oficial merchandise along with DVDs, Blurays, figurines, etc.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-01 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You're only a real anime fan supporting the anime industry if you move to Japan and watch the shows there. (/sarcasm)
