Depends what it is, doesn't it? The things that have really been strongly criticized for this - the Cameron Crowe movie with Emma Stone whose name I forget, and the GITS remake - I think it's fairly reasonable to say, you know, these are things that are still set in Hawaii or Japan, so it's really weird to make the characters no longer Asian. It's different to me when it's something like Death Note where the setting itself was changed.

IDK, it really does all depend on context.

Aloha isn't a remake as far as I know, so it categorically doesn't fit in with what I'm talking about here, which is specifically about setting the same story in a non-Asian context and therefore making it no longer necessarily about Asian characters.

Ghost in the Shell, I wouldn't have minded the casting as much if they had been ballsy enough to remove the story from its original setting. BUT THEN, you can argue the story wouldn't have worked anymore. Some works just can't be adapted out of the cultural mold it was created in. It would be like trying to do an American version of The Last Emperor. What the hell would that even be?

That's a fair point about Aloha.

I think the other thing with GitS is that the relationship between cyberpunk, as a genre, and Asian-ness is one that is, uh, historically vexed, to say the least. So that probably informed some of the criticism as well.

They did everything stupid possible with GitS, up to and including keeping the lead’s real identity that of a Japanese woman. Just ridiculous. The Alita movie changed loads of characters’ ethnicities but got nowhere near the amount of flak. Just do a western version and be upfront about it.
