Besides Ghost in the Shell, what other roles of hers have been whitewashed?

not secret op, but i'm glad you asked that. i looked her up and couldn't really find anything? and apparently after ghost in the shell she said she'd never accept whitewashed roles again and by all appearances hasn't

Yeah, OP is right that it's "not totally fair."

It's not whitewashing, but she costarred in a movie about being a white foreigner in Japan (Lost in Translation) and some people think movies like that shouldn't be made because if you're going to make a movie about a nonwhite country, it should always be about the people who come from there and not white foreigners.

OP is probably also associating whitewashing with the fact that she almost had the role of a (debatably) trans historical figure, but that movie was dropped.

That's... not really dealing with the central argument there, I don't think

man, lost in translation was such a good movie, even if it had its head up its ass. it captured the feeling of being stranded somewhere where you don't speak language or understand customs so well, it super tripped me

Not whitewashing but Lucy was like. Kinda racist? Despite starting being set in Hong Kong every Asian character is a gangster who ScarJo kills

She was next going to play a RL person who may or may not have identified as a trans man (it was the 70s) but was definitely a very butch person who looked nothing like ScarJo. One of those Oscar-baiting "ugly" roles where the whole joke is how transformed the attractive actor is.

Yup

And she got publicly shamed into not doing it so without any star power to sell the movie the studio pulled the plug and it never got made. Woke people doing better at the alt-rights gig than the actual alt-right.

Seriously, The Alt-right turn up to protest the film with their banners and their online campaigns, the movie people be like "This is great all the free publicity this film is gonna do great" and they fail to get the film shut down.

The woke crowd turn up with the same shit, but from the opposite direction and the film folds like superman on laundry day.

Just reminds me of the thing about how it it take less pressure to crack an egg from the inside than the outside.
