The companies have branches in other countries. Why not work for them instead? Japanese is not an easy language to learn.

To be fair, the branches of companies like Nintendo and Atlus don't really focus on game development as much as they seem to do localization and translation. So if s/he went that route, and wanted to focus on Japanese-based companies, a grasp of the language would still be pretty damn helpful in landing an actual job.

....which brings up the question of why Ubisoft or the like is deficient and insufficient for OP's gaming needs. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was awesome.

Besides, given how many games don't make it out of Japan, it can't hurt as a gamer. I'm STILL bitter over Tales of Innocence.

actually, working for Ubisoft your best bet is to learn french. though i totally agree in general. yeah, some awesome devs are Japanese, but there are good english language ones as well. Bioware being the first one that comes to mind. not to mention EA is pretty much a powerhouse of developers.

of course, if the OP is set on making Japanese style games, then nevermind.

True about Ubisoft. I was more commenting on them being a developer I'd deem good that's not from Japan, but you're right, French would be better for them. Bioware also came to mind, but...weren't they bought out by EA? EA's got their strengths, but I can't say I'd necessarily want to work for them.

But that's neither here nor there. I laud your taste in icon. I kicked more ass as Cassandra in Soul Calibur, but I liked Kilik. Beating people up as him was just so...satisfying.

EA isn't usually a developer team. they're just the publisher. they did buy out Bioware, but Bioware still exists on it's own as a development team. EA just owns them and gets to put in input or whatever. that said, while some of the dev teams are great, Pandemic among them, EA themselves are jerks that need to be punched in the face. i speak from personal expirence.

Ah. I just wasn't sure how much influence EA would exert on Bioware now they're one big happy family.
