150 I hope you are a troll. Cosplaying to "be the best" is no motivation to cosplay at all. Thinking like that is just going to get you hated. Whether you are Western or Asian, there's no point in cosplaying if all you want to do is be better than others, and 99.999% of the time there are always going to be people better than you, no matter how good you are.

And in the end, even if you think you are the best, you can't go around saying that you are for obvious reasons, unless of course you want to be hated. It's a way of getting attention after all, but keep in mind, unless you CAN compete with the top cosplayers in Asia AND the West, claiming to be the best will look very stupid.

It looks like you're justifying your fail by saying "I'm not Asian"

If anything, people in English-speaking fandom like it more when westerners cosplay well. If you truly are the 'best' cosplayer for C.C. You will have fans regardless of whether you are Asian or not. There are some people with bias, but it goes both ways. Some people think Asian cosplayers are worth nothing and just made of photoshop.

Though actually, that picture of C.C. is almost all photoshop of another person. It's stolen.

157. Someone seems to want to justify themselves a little too much. :( Honestly? Do what you want to do! Don't worry about what other people think. Japan is looking for more people to learn the language and work in Japan because of its declining birthrate, and you have an interest and you know what you want to do. Don't let some idiots ruin your future, and good luck! It's a hard language to learn...

Actually, that last part is a lie: I lived in Japan last year for about four months, and they're so xenophobic that the government isn't even considering getting foreign workers in to deal with the birthrate problem. Those few foreign workers who ARE in Japan are generally mistreated and ostracized. In fact, I read an article where a Japanese government worker actually said that Japan should focus more on their robotics industry so they don't have to rely on foreigners.

[identity profile] hoshika.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. SO MUCH.

All it takes is google and some research to look up personal cases of this xenophobia. I mean hell, I've read several articles where it is clearly stated how Japan does not want more foreigners.

I don't understand how some people are so delusional about Japan still. D:

Anyway, I think there is a thin line between xenophobia and racism...and Japan clearly walks that thin line daily.

Oh? Interesting. It's just that recently, a few newspapers in Asia were hyping on about how the government does want foreign workers to deal with the problem. I'd thought that it may well just be the government saying so and the culture not following along, (because as far as I know Japan *is* quite xenophobic). I figured OP might get a job in the long run if this were the case.

Either way, OP shouldn't worry about their reasons for learning Japanese as long as they learn it and learn it well. People shouldn't really be so self conscious about it. Learning something for the sake of learning it isn't a crime. There are so many fans who learn it just because of anime, suddenly decide that it is too hard, and then drop it, and who really cares? Sure it's a weeaboo thing to do, but mh, their loss for not continuing.

If OP gets disillusioned in their career choice later on so be it, it's through their own naivety. I don't know much about gaming either, so essentially I wanted to say that they shouldn't need to justify their reasons for choosing a career. They should just do what they want to do, and if it turns out being shit, then they brought it on themselves. Maybe I'm a bit of a romantic but it doesn't mean you shouldn't follow your dreams.

Personally, I'm just going to settle down quietly wherever my life takes me and the only reason I learn Japanese is so I can get raws and watch them, since I hate being spoiled so much. I don't see why that's such a bad reason for learning it. Languages are fun and Japanese is especially complex so I enjoy the challenge. *shrug*

[identity profile] hoshika.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Okay...neither I nor tenshi are saying not to learn Japanese. What we are saying is the harsh reality that is the Japanese culture and government. They don't like hiring gaijin.

Hell, I learned some Japanese, because like you I wanted to read the raws for some mangas. I gave up however because my major demands more classes out of me, and I don't have time to commit to learning Japanese.

And I'm really curious about those newspaper articles. I mean, it is logical to invite foreigners and obviously there are logical Japanese people who don't mind gaijin living in Japan. However, a large amount are xenophobic and the change of attitude will take a long time.

And I'm all for the Secret Poster to go after their dream job, but they shouldn't be delusional. It's the worst thing to do. If you want your dream job then you better know the pros and cons of your future. I don't like simply encouraging people but not giving them a heads up. IMO, it's better to be knowledgeable and know ALL your possible options before opting to go down a path.

[identity profile] teal-deer.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not discouraging learning Japanese in general; what I'm discouraging is the excuse. Saying that you want to learn Japanese to break into the Japanese gaming industry is unrealistic. You could be a localizer on the US side, maybe; but actually working in Japan in a field like that is completely unrealistic. That, and the whole argument seems hypocritical. Anime fans who like anime better than US cartoons are fanbrats for wanting to learn Japanese... but you, who like Japanese games better than US games are not? Um...
Basically everything Hoshika said.
