112: Yes, I totally agree. I think that Kishimoto is sometimes sloppy when he's drawing bodies and faces, but overall he's very good.

114: It's one of those speech pattern things that are really hard (but probably not impossible) to translate. It's just a way of emphasising "it is". Usually only old men speak like that.

117: Well, the Uchiha mystery is pretty central to the main story... Anyway, the manga is currently focusing on Naruto, who happens to be my favourite, so I'm happy!

142: Er, it's just a tattoo, isn't it? Nothing to go crazy over, I would have thought...

145: What's with this hatred for the animation medium? It's just as valid way to tell a story as any other.

157: There's no bad or wrong reason for learning a new language. So some people want to learn Japanese because they've fallen in love with a small part of the Japanese culture? What's the problem?

159: I've often started to watch certain series to see what all the fuss is about. Sometimes I like it, sometimes not. I recently started watching Katekyo Hitman Reborn because of a BL game I found in Japan! The silliest things can make you interested, and it really doesn't matter. People care too much about these things.

163: Seriously. I'm so used to subs (we get a lot of foreign programmes here in Sweden) that watching things in my own language can be annoying. The mumbling! The too loud background music! So annoying. You're not supposed to read the subtitles instead of watching the image - it's supposed to happen at the same time!

Disagree about the quality of dubs, though. There are no good Swedish dubs (aside from a few of the Disney films). Probably because generally only programmes aimed at kids too young to read very well are dubbed, and they apparently don't notice bad acting...

Generally, my attitude towards dubbing is bafflement. Why would you want to? Especially for anime, where the Japanese voice actors are so skilled. But that's cultural differences for you, I suppose.

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a cultural difference, yeah. Here in the US, dubbing quality has vastly improved in recent years, so at this point they're on par with the Japanese actors (in my opinion). I love the Japanese actors, but I love the American ones, too, and it feels like a more natural experience watching a dub than a sub. I can watch the sub and normally do, I just watch the dub first.

So that's one dub fan's opinion? Sub fans are cool with me, though. It's just a preference thing.

Re: 163

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't care what people prefer to watch. I do become annoyed when people assume knowledge and/or preference of the U.S. dub on the international forum that is most of fandom, though.

it feels like a more natural experience watching a dub than a sub.

And for me it's completely the other way around!

Re: 163

[identity profile] haleysings.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, they assume that? I've often come across attitudes of "If you're a real anime fan you'll know dubs are trash", I haven't seen people assume people are dub fans...except for shows where the big draw is the dub, like Ghost Stories. It could just be the circles I move in, though.

Yup. Personal preference, etc etc. I got into anime fandom through watching anime on TV, so that's probably part of it.

Re: 163

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
It's only noticeable in certain fandoms. I spent quite some time in the YGO fandom wondering who Joey, Tristan, and Duke were, and why they were so popular...

I don't like bashing either way, and tend to keep away from circles were it's accepted; that wasn't the issue. It was the attitude that of course everybody watched the U.S. version! Preferring the original version is just snobbery! It was very annoying.

I got into anime fandom through watching anime on TV, so that's probably part of it.

We just recently started getting anime on the telly here; FMA, Naruto, and Samurai Champloo runs now, among others. But since they're not aimed at the youngest crowd, they're not dubbed, so even people finding it there will only be exposed to the original.

Some of the other channels aired dubbed anime earlier; more specifically Sailormoon, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Digimon. The target audience were twelve years or younger, and completely unwatchable other than for making fun of for anybody else. And I actually like Yu-Gi-Oh! (I'm thirty.) I was vexed. XD

Well, I kinda liked the swedish dub for digimon...And I was about 14 or 15 when I watched it :/ Even though I was slightly annoyed that most characters sounded the same, because of the few voice actors they used >_

Re: 163

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the true dreadfulness becomes evident when you compare it to the original, and/or when you've watched other anime in Japanese. Try and watch an episode today, and I think you'll know what I mean. The thing that annoyed me the most, though, was that we got the edited U.S. version of the anime itself, so the music and some other things were horribly Americanized.

163. Because most english dubs nowadays are better compared to the original. My opinion, of course.

[identity profile] yuliee.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
Like Haley said, it's a cultural thing. Some american dubs are actually really good, and it seems a lot of people view reading as a hassle (which is a shame, since it comes quite easily to me.)

Re: 163

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, they do the same down on the continent (dub everything, I mean). Never ceases to perplex us up here. :)

159

(Anonymous) 2008-09-28 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
True. Problem is that I'm sure if I get into it I'll want to get into the whole fandom, and I've heard enough stories about Narutards to thuroughly scare me.

Plus I'm super lazy when it comes to getting into things through online means (it's too late to try to follow it on tv), and if I DO start watching it on YouTube or whatever...well, I have the tendency to get too obsessed with something to the point that I put off doing anything else for it. Like homework.

Stupid reasons are stupid. >>

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, knowing that much of your life may be put on hold if you start such a long series, and hesitating be cause of that seems rather level-headed to me. My advice is to read the manga, and if you do choose to watch the anime sometime, skip all the filler (there's a list on youtube, I think). Personally, I tend to download my anime from Direct Connect, but that works best if you can find someone from our own country to download from (otherwise it can be really slow).

I'm not in the fandom, but I think it's one of those big ones where it's fairly easy to find people sharing your tastes and general approach to the canon.

Ugh,agreed about the swedish dubbing - I can barely watch any cartoons nowadays because of the horrible voices >x< The only exceptions have been Sailor Moon and Spongebob Squarepants :)
