My bad--I checked on the other comments and got the real definition. I hear the phrase get tossed around so much, I thought it meant when a 'useless female character gets screwed over for her own stupidity'--or at least, that's about what it comes out to when I see the rampant Penny-bashing that's been circulating the 'net. =\

I didn't think that her only role in the story was to get killed though...I thought she was also there as an amusing contrast--out of all the characters who are going about their own way to help the world and make it better--she was the only one actually doing something that actually helped people. She did have a personality, imho, and while it wasn't as blatant as the other two, it was there.

Still, my bad for the misunderstanding--by the real definition, yes, she does get the shit end of the stick. :(

Eurgh, I hate character bashing.

She definitely had potential as a character, but I didn't like that most of the plot was what the men did to her, or about her. If she had the same personality and commitment to helping people but actually got to affect the plot, I'd be fine with her.

Heh, don't worry about the misunderstanding--I was getting confused myself after seeing a lot of comments on the show. XD

Oh man, I do too--esp. when canon is twisted in the process. >_< It's not that she didn't have a personality or anything like that, it's just that she wasn't the main character. The story is 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long Blog'--the story is about him, how other characters and situations affect him. While we would all love for Dr. Horrible's main squeeze to start coming more into her own, it just cannot be done in his story without taking away the focus from him--and since this is essentially an origin story, that's not gonna fly. =\

As for Penny's personality and her Caring Hands foundation affecting the plot--I kinda thought that was more of a social commentary. You notice that when she was out on the street collecting signatures, no one would even take the pamphlet.

'Would you lend a caring hand to shelter those who need it?
Only have to sign your name, don't even have to read it...

But as soon as Capt. Hammer decides to help out in order to gain her affections, suddenly everyone is all over the 'Caring Hands' project--much like people will pay more attention to American Idol instead of the presidential elections. No one does anything until their favorite celebrity gets involved. =p Well, at least that's my take on it.
