... you think everyone loves the new story line? Seriously? Most of the reactions I've read are more "I know he's hot, but...".

I personally have more of a problem with people flipping out because they're bringing God into it (we can suspend disbelief for demons and monsters but not God for a TV SHOW?) than because some few like the story line. Personally, I'm withholding judgment until I see where Kripke ultimately takes it. *shrug*

I'm not necessarily "flipping out" over the God stuff, but I, personally, can't stand it because they've spent the last three seasons going, "Oh, um, yeah, we're really ambiguous about god" and I was so happy, because I love a supernatural-themed show that doesn't involve religion (I'm more or less an atheist, myself).

And then they start out s4 and so far, it's all been hardcore Christian/Catholic ideology and yammering on and on and on about angels and god's plans, etc., and it pisses me off. It feels like it's being shoved down my throat, and I really don't like that. I'm not a huge fan of religious themes to begin with, and to take a show I thought was, well, "safe" from that kind of crap and then turn the volume of the religious stuff up to 11 was a bit shitty from my angle. :\

I understand why some people might like it. But I don't, and the only reason I'm holding on is 'cos I'm too fond of the boys to just quit watching in the middle. (Well, and because I have a friend I watch with who'd be stranded to watch on her own, and it's enough trouble trying to get both of us to sit down and watch it, let alone one without the other to coerce her! :P)

I'm sorry you're upset about it, but I'll say it again. It's a TV show. A storyline. They aren't demanding that you run out and get baptized and start going to church every Sunday. Did you feel like they were shoving demons down your throat for three years? I assume you don't believe in demons, either.

Kripke has said over and over that he knows where the show is going, that he has a five-year plan. I think he fully intended to do this storyline from the beginning, but he knew people would freak the fuck out (not that I'm saying you are, but some are) and wouldn't give the show a chance, and so didn't let it out that he planned it. He's proven he likes misdirecting in interviews.

I don't know. Maybe it's just because I'm a relatively new fan - I only got into the show a couple of months ago, and I sped through the first three seasons like a madwoman, because I loved it. Then this season is just kind of painful to watch for me. :\ I know they're not forcing me to do or believe anything, but it just feels... off to me. Like they're trying too hard, forcing it too much, pushing it where they shouldn't.

It's true, if I'd known they were gonna do a Huge Religious Storyline, I probably wouldn't have seen the show at all. I don't like that stuff. It's a pity that they felt the need to go this route, imho.

I'm just hoping it gets better/more tolerable :D And holding on for 4x09, omg.

I'm really excited for next week's, actually. I've always loved Mitch Pileggi.

I'm not familiar with him, but it sounds interesting. My friend and I are making lots of Doctor Who jokes. :P

Re: 148

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
LOL! See, and I don't know all that much about Doctor Who. Pileggi was Assistant Director Skinner in The X-Files.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
OMG, seriously? I love that guy. I just don't know his name. XD That's effing awesome.

Not that I'm gonna be able to differentiate between Skinner and whoever he's playing in the ep now... XD

Re: 148

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yep! He definitely looks older and scruffier now, lol. I can't wait for Thursday!

Re: 148

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'd imagine. :P Awesome.

I can wait, but that's only because I have an exam Thursday night, like right before the ep. xD

Re: 148

[identity profile] juice817.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
And I'll have to wait because I have choir practice from 6:30 to 9 every Thursday. I'm so SO glad I have a DVR so I don't have to wait for a download.

Good luck with your exam!

Re: 148

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ohh, lucky. :P I have to wait for the download because stupid rural Vermont cable doesn't get the CW. *was SO miffed to find that out... at 7:50pm the night of 4x01's airing*

Thanks :D

They did a whole show based on Sam's faith and him admitting he prays. And Dean admitting to miracles.

They use holy water and religious exorcisms. They use the name of friggin Christ to identify demons.

The show has never been religiously ambiguous, imo.

Re: 148

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
There's a pretty big difference between a character believing in god or in miracles and saying, "Oh hey, god is real, definitely, and angels, too, and oh, god has plans for individual people, blah blah".

I've always seen it as ambiguous, ie when the "angel" turned out to just be a spirit, etc. The dichotomy between Sam's belief and Dean's more atheistic/agnostic tendencies.

I never saw it as religious.

Re: 148

[identity profile] caveat-lect0r.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you. I think most people have selective memory about the show - Dean was an atheist, so they chose to think the entire universe of the show was. Kripke's been leading up to this for a while, like it or not.

Re: 148

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but it got a lot more blatant with the insertion of Castiel. On one hand, most religions have some form of demon-like creature (and they've used other exorcism methods). Not all religons have angels, and certainly not all religions-- or even all sects of Christianity-- have that sort of God's Plan.

Where does that leave the non-Western/Christian monsters?
