(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)What is irritating is when these same fans that rant about not having content that caters to their own individual preferences refuse to even try to make it themselves. Fandom is built on creativity; you can't just take and take and not give back. No, you do NOT have to be skilled or talented, contrary to what some of these fans cry as a response. Some of the most innovative content is produced by decidedly not-so-professional writers and artists.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)But giving back doesn't have to be writing fic. It could be leaving positive comments on what is already out there. Or promoting discussion. Or other things that are fandom but not writing fic/making art.
I dislike when "write it yourself" is the standard response. Because that doesn't work for some people and there are other things.
This opinion is really easy to flip back on the other group of fans.
Except as someone pointed out above, it isn't the same thing. Someone venting that there is nothing in their fandom is venting to the void about a thing. Someone telling that person to shut up is directly attacking a person. They are not the same.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-09 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)Which would be fair if everyone did that. Which everyone does not, as evident by low comment counts on most fics, regardless of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-10 06:16 am (UTC)(link)As a fandom creator...I'm totally fine with people lurking and enjoying my fic without giving back. Sure, kudos and comments and recs are nice, but I don't need everyone who reads my fic to respond in public. If certain people are more comfortable consuming it and not providing feedback, then that's okay by me.
I still have enough readers who are willing to hit the kudos button or leave lovely comments or rec my fic that I feel rewarded and appreciated for my efforts. And some of those lurkers may turn into active participants in fandom later. That's what I did. :-)

(Anonymous) 2019-06-10 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)I'm a fandom creator who plays primarily in small fandoms now. From what I've seen, this is about the people who don't give back, who then go on to complain "But there's no fic for my ship/pairing/fandom!" when that's not the case. It's passive-aggressive because believe me, the writers see these comments. It's demoralizing to those already writing for that fandom/ship/pairing. It's a real problem in small fandoms where the writing pool is already tiny, where months can go by without new content.
You can only get out what you put in, and that goes for the readers, too. Sure, readers don't have to leave feedback. OTOH they shouldn't be surprised either, when existing creators drift away and nothing gets made at all. If existing content is not what you want, then encourage existing creators to make it for you, or jump in and do it yourself.
