I do find them pretty cringey, and I've never signed one.

I try to think about it more as people just wanting to know they're not alone in feeling disappointed about how things went with a story they care deeply about. Ostensibly it's about trying to accomplish something, but the fact that these petitions keep springing up even though they never accomplish anything makes me think that, more than anything, they're just an outlet for people to vent their impotent frustrations, and feel that they're in good company. It's still cringey, IMO, but I kind of understand it, too.
