Fandom petitions

I found this article and it gave me a laugh.

I guess I agree with the article. Who starts these things anyway? Is it tumblr-era babyfans who've grown up with less of a barrier between creators and fans? People who just want to vent? Personally I cringe when I see hear about one because it seems so out of touch. What about you guys? Has anyone ever signed something like that?

It's definitely, DEFINITELY not exclusive to young Tumblr fans

I do find them pretty cringey, and I've never signed one.

I try to think about it more as people just wanting to know they're not alone in feeling disappointed about how things went with a story they care deeply about. Ostensibly it's about trying to accomplish something, but the fact that these petitions keep springing up even though they never accomplish anything makes me think that, more than anything, they're just an outlet for people to vent their impotent frustrations, and feel that they're in good company. It's still cringey, IMO, but I kind of understand it, too.

Babyfans don't send petitions, they send death threats.

Fandom petitions have been a thing for a long time. They continue to be a thing because sometimes they work, because they put a concrete number to the fans who are disappointed or angry.

When have they worked? I can't think of anything.

DA

I can think of several, but they weren't wah wah bring my fave back type requests. More like shows of interest en masse and showing companies a market was there.

For example, a poll/petition to bring back old school Runescape worked, and now the old MMO is more popular than the new version. A petition to bring back "classic" World of Warcraft worked and that's set to launch this year.

Lots of people on the Internet send death threats, unfortunately.

I remember petitions when I was in college in the 80s, in the science fiction fandom. I can't remember any specifics. I never signed one because on some level they bother me but I can't articulate why. But they've been around a long long time.

Eh, stereotypical male fans and historic male-dominated fandoms have been nerdraging and cringily petitioning shit forever. Not really a big surprise to me that now that powerhouse female-dominated fandoms have arisen, they turn out to be the same. People be people

I'm not even gonna lie, I've considered signing a petition like this once before and I'm definitely not a babyfan. I didn't because I recognized it was serious entitlement on my part, but I get why people would.

I think those have been around for a while, not just a tumblr thing. I remember someone organizing a petition through e-mail to protest something game players found objectionable about an Nintendo 64 game (and yes, being a kid, I signed). Personally I think people of all flavors start them. Some want to vent (such as the GoT season 8 do-over... at least, I wouldn't seriously think a do-over would happen), while some definitely want a change or want to prevent a change.
