I think those have been around for a while, not just a tumblr thing. I remember someone organizing a petition through e-mail to protest something game players found objectionable about an Nintendo 64 game (and yes, being a kid, I signed). Personally I think people of all flavors start them. Some want to vent (such as the GoT season 8 do-over... at least, I wouldn't seriously think a do-over would happen), while some definitely want a change or want to prevent a change.
