Water Bearer & Maiden & Royalty & Crab (sort of) - Changeling Sea by Patricia McKillip?

Fantasy but I'd say not high fantasy? Or at least epic fantasy. It's tightly focused on the main character who hates the sea for killing her sailor father, her mother's grief, and her futile attempts to curse the sea for taking her father. There is a romantic side plot but it's not a big focus and she's not in an actual relationship at the end even if there possibilities she could be later.

Water Bearer - Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome? (Kind of a comedy)

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (it makes references to Three Men in a Boat but this involves a boat trip much less, and more time travel. Also kind of a comedy.)

And there's always Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson for Water & Crab (grumps)

Maiden & Royalty - Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde
The teen main character gets trapped in a virtual reality game. She must successfully become 'King' within the time limit to get out or suffer brain damage.

It's actually fairly light despite the premise. (It also came out in 2002 so hilariously it did not jump into the bandwagon for 'trapped in a game' genre.)
