Maiden & Royalty - Heir Apparent by Vivian Vande Velde
The teen main character gets trapped in a virtual reality game. She must successfully become 'King' within the time limit to get out or suffer brain damage.

It's actually fairly light despite the premise. (It also came out in 2002 so hilariously it did not jump into the bandwagon for 'trapped in a game' genre.)
