hachi machi!
silverr: a character from The Devil Wears Prada with his hand over his mouth (_oops)

... yeah. Dodged a bullet there, we did.

As much as I like Robin Williams, that would've been baaaaaaad.

I remember hearing about that and I hated the idea at the time. I liked both actors at the time but they just weren't right for the characters at all.
sabotabby: (books!)

We are truly blessed.

(I like Robin Williams, but. No.)

I can see it, actually? Like Robin would've been great for sure and Depp is kind of right for that kind of a character, too. Now, IDK how old that idea is but I'm thinking it was a while ago and that's not taking into account all the recent Depp stuff, obviously.

Robin Williams is great and funny, but IMO he's not a good fit for the part. All his comic roles are recognizably Robin Williams. He loves ad-libbing, and he's great at it. But that's not who Aziraphale is. He's not a comedian who tosses out one-liners and does impressions. He's not Robin Williams.

Absolutely agreed.

Oh that would have been ABYSMAL.

Gilliam might have been a good fit as a director, yes, but NEITHER actor was right, and honestly, a movie wouldn't have been as good as the series just because SO much would have to be cut out of it.

I love Robin Williams, but Robin Williams-in-a-comedic-role just isn't AZIRAPHALE, and the idea of casting an American in the role... It's not enough to be able to do a comedy British accent, Aziraphale strikes people as being so quintessentially English that it's remarkable even to actual Englishmen. Something Michael Sheen does a wonderful job of (as much as I delight to his Welsh accent)-- and he's loved the book and character for thirty years.

Honestly I don't think Robin William would have been too bad for the role. I do get where everyone's coming from though;;

Robin Williams and Johnny Depp would’ve been horrible as Aziraphale and Crowley, but I would’ve liked to see them as the televangelist that got cut from the miniseries and as Famine, respectively.
