Re: Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make...

I loved parts of the Good Omens series, especially the new material for Aziraphale and Crowley, but there were parts that made me cringe, too, specifically Adam telling Pepper “say what you believe” just so she could quote Tori Amos.

Along with Brian and Wensleydale, saying they believed in a clean environment and healthy lunch, it was too hokey-inspirational after school special. Add in Satan actually showing up just so Adam could “you may have been my father, but you weren’t my real dad” him out of existence, and the whole confrontation felt underwhelming.

The part with Pepper irritated me so much and reminded me why I dislike Neil Gaiman's writing and wish someone else had written the script. It felt cheesy and not in keeping with the character, just Gaiman trying to be cool so he could put in a quote from his friend's song. The entire series actually felt a lot to me like it sacrificed heart for witty one liners and flashiness (honestly all of Gaiman's characters in his books that I've read have felt terribly cardboard and lifeless to me, so I assume my like of Good Omens the book is due to Pratchett's good character work).

I really agree. The Them didn't feel like friends at all, and I was disappointed in the horsemen.

I love Aziraphale and Crowley but honestly part of me feels like the series tried so hard to pander to that side of the fandom that the show ended up shafting literally every other character. Aziraphale and Crowley are great and their relationship is great, but they can't carry the story alone and I felt like everyone else in the show was an afterthought which just killed the larger plot -- Good Omens doesn't work if Adam and the Them aren't believable.

Yup. They were so flat! Anathema was, as well. It was disappointing.

By the last episode I'd honestly forgotten all about Newt and Anathema, they were so flat and they just felt oddly pointless. The Horsemen were dull too, I think it was a bad choice to just show them each once while introducing them. I really liked how the book had them show up in bits and pieces earlier and let the reader figure out on their own who these people really are, which made them feel less like an afterthought.

Yes.
And then when they were actually *being* horsemen, they were just...dull. I kept waiting for War's teeth to look 'like bullets', for them to just have some *presence*! Death was just....*boring*!
*sigh*

Newt and Shadwell were boring in the book, so i wasn't much interested in them in the show (and they were boring in the show, too), and yeah - Anathema and Newt kinda just fizzled.

Oh, well - a lot of people love it, Crowley and Axiriphale were fun, so i'll take it.

They did though, I read somewhere that someone (the actors maybe) went and read fanfic and tried to act the characters more in a way that the fandom would just eat it up.

It was an ok TV production, but I can see why it's a direct-to-prime release.
