I feel like the only way to end it properly was to embrace the cheese. Without going full dairy, there was no way to top off most of the beginning sequences. Sure, not all of it was needed to tell a proper story, but without adding more outrageous stuff, the progression just wouldn't be there.

You must be hanging out in the actual Undertale fandom or something? I'm usually only in casual gaming circles and it's generally treated as just a good game, not 'literary masterpiece' lol.

You sound like someone who likes grimdark bullshit. Like, yeah, a game about how you don't actually have to hurt anyone is gonna be cheesy. Because a lot of people see that as cheesy and thus put it in your head that it's cheesy instead of... Normal???

I literally started off describing the games as charming and positive, cool that you still went ahead claiming that I dislike those attributes. Also cool how you proved my point on how aggro people get when you criticize Undertale for anything lol

You said it was fine to start, then complained about the ending, dude. The endings which are built on "your bonds are important and being nice rewards you even if the road is harder."

Like IDK, this is me in general being Tired of this, and not just about Undertale and hearing how "cheesy and childish" things like this are.

Jesus dude it's possible to do wholesome without going full on anime with it. As already established I don't even have a problem with positive themes, I cringe at the cheesy ass VILLAINS. They show up at the end with edgy monologues and melodramatic bullshit and I cannot take it anywhere near as seriously as the game expects me to.

It's a video game. Like, do you seriously expect the villains to be mellow and chill and not be over the top and spectacle?

If you're looking at it from a pure plot angle then most videogames have underwhelming stories. The ending was supposed to evoke powerful emotion because you've spent so much time with these characters and you really want them to have a happy ending. Not be a literary masterpiece. I dont think anyone thought of it like that.

I'm sorry you didn't get anything out of the ending. It seems like you didn't really connect with the characters as much as others did and looked at it from a more objective, critical angle, than enmeshing yourself with the world and your friendship with the characters.

Not OP - Maybe you have a point there. I also thought the endings were cheesy and didn't like them, but I also didn't really like/care about any of the characters! So i guess if I liked the characters maybe the ending would've struck more a cord with me. Hmmm

Sometimes I wonder if it's diverging paths in games that can make a difference too. Like you can't get the good ending and some of the branching stories on the first run, so if you stop playing after that, you miss on all those extra scenes. I didn't get all the hubbub about the characters until I played again and got the good ending.

I think I feel similar to you and OP about VA-11 Hall-A. It seemed like everyone loved the game and the characters but I thought it was boring. Apparently there are different endings and different things that can happen during a playthrough but I guess I just missed all the good stuff because of the choices I made.

SA - Well I dunno that MAY be part of it. With Undertale, I played a standard run and then the pacifist run because apparently people liked that route... But I just couldn't stand any of the characters! Or at the very least, I didn't like them enough to care about killing them. I think the problem for me was that Overwatch had SO MANY characters, and if you didn't like them right away then it was difficult to care about them all.

Are you sure it's the ending that everyone hails as a literary masterpiece? Because to me, the most impressive writing in the game was its meta commentary on video games and why we do what we do in them. Especially when it blended gameplay with its message in ways that'd be impossible in any other format. That's what really caught my attention, not the tropey story.

I agree completely! I cringe just thinking about it.

i'm bored of people using anime and jrpg as negative descriptors. the word 'cringy' needs to be retired too.
