Yeah, I'm a multishipper but hearing about how canon someone's otp is (even if the otp is actually canon) makes me ship it less.

Usually not going to make me dislike something I already like. But it will turn minor dislike into hate when the fans are really smug jerks about it.

Same here.

I go one of two ways when I'm watching (or reading) something, depending on my mood. Sometimes I watch with "what could happen?" in mind looking out for clues etc and I really do see a twist coming. Other times I don't bother thinking about it too hard and just let the story take me wherever. As I said, it depends on my mood and probably the genre. Sometimes it's fun to speculate but there's a difference between having fun and being obnoxious.

And yeah I can't stand it when you get fans acting like anyone who didn't see something coming is stupid. Maybe they weren't actively looking for anything? Maybe they were just genuinely surprised. I feel like throwing your weight around about how clever you are because you noticed Twist A and Plot Point B is definitely you over-compensating for something.

Same. I'm not always trying to predict things. Often, I'm just going with the flow, letting things happen and not putting too much mental energy into it. I didn't see a thing coming because I wasn't bothering to think about it. I was never participating in the Totally Saw it Coming competition!

I completely love how this secret followed #5.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering this is a comment secret based on a comment I made based on exactly people saying what is in number 5...

(Anonymous) 2019-06-17 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
There is nothing smug about #5 unlss you are a rabid Dany fan pissed that what was obvious to anyone objective passed you by as you squeed about dragons.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-17 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
D&D admitted they changed things around to subvert expectations so if you "saw" this coming you're an idiot, you weren't meant to be able to see it coming it's just shock tactics for the sake of being edgy.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If I predict something, I'll be gobsmacked and laugh and wonder how the fuck I managed to.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
True, but I'm not sure anything can match that time some Steven Universe fans were "warning" people that, 'some things you theorised might happen in the show have happened in the show! The show runners are trawling tween Tumblr fanblogs for ideas!!!' ○o○
I mean, the general response was to call them self-absorbed dipshits, but still!

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
not only true but this picture is PERFECT

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sick of both extremes. Can we lock the smug fans and the "I didn't see this coming, so obviously the writers were wrong!" fans in the same room so they can work things out on their own while the rest of us go on with our lives?

+1

Hahaha, yes!

Agreed.

What gets me are the people who never say "I think X will happen" before the fact, but after the fact they want everyone to know that they "Totally knew X was going to happen!" Sure you did.

Actually, I can believe they did, but it doesn't say much for their confidence in their predictions if they only tell people about them after they know they've been proved right. It doesn't count if you don't tell people until after the fact!

Given the way that half the fandom acts like you need to put a spoiler warning in front of predictions, I'd keep my thoughts to myself.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-17 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's a difference between being excited about having predicted something, and like... being a dick about it to others, too-- like, it's not insufferable to be pleased with yourself for catching something that was foreshadowed in a subtle way, or even just for guessing something and seeing it happen. It's when you act like someone is stupid for not seeing what you saw that it gets to be unbearable.

(As for not talking about seeing a twist coming beforehand and claiming you knew all along, for me it depends on context. If I blog about a show and I speculate on what will happen, and I don't mention X big twist until it happens and then say I knew all along, that's pretty suspicious. But if I'm watching something with non-fandom friends/family and I see a big twist coming because I'm media-savvy, or because I talked about it with other fans online, I keep my mouth shut until the thing happens because I don't want to be the guy who 'spoils' a twist, I'd rather see what my non-fannish friends might speculate on or how they react. But after the fact, I might say 'oh, when X happened, that's when I realized they were doing Y!', and I would hope to not be called a liar just because I didn't want to blurt out the ending twist mid-viewing)
