When has Fandom Helped you in Real Life

At work I was shown a new programme to convert CCTV and Video files that nobody really knows how to use, but is key for sorting a compilation into a playable format.

Turns out it's the exact same programme I use to convert all my anime into a playable format for my TV. Having struggled with all kind of bizarre and finicky formats from rips of shows from the eighties, I'm quite adept with it.

Explaining to my boss why I'm so conversant with it, and that I could run the office through how to use it was quite the challenge.

I could name the cliché "it taught me English" which turned into my career, but a more specific example would be that my finely tuned ability to read characters for the purpose of writing fic was a boon when discussing literature academically.

I had a breast cancer scare years ago and I sort heard House's voice in my head yelling at me to go get a mammogram. (Luckily for me it wasn't breast cancer, it was just a cyst that didn't even need surgery.)
