Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
If given the choice, would you choose to leave the Matrix, or stay in the Matrix?

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Stay, I guess. The world outside was too awful.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
This assumes one's been made aware of the Matrix?

Hmmm. Not sure. On the one hand, I'd want to help people. On the other hand, in the Matrix context, I don't think I'd be much good to anyone out of the Matrix. So probably stay.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to say I'd leave, because truth and reality and all.

But then again, I've been guilty of spending like 14 hours straight playing MMORPGs so history's not for me on this one.

Stay. Outside of the Matrix seems like a horrible, hopeless place.

I guess I'd have to leave. I'd rather never know and stay in the Matrix in ignorance, but once that knowledge is forced and a choice must be done, the responsible thing would do to leave and try to make the better of the outside world. But I would hate it all the way.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. I think if the Matrix were real, I would be a resource drain if I left it, because I’m not particularly good at any of the skills that would make a good guerrilla fighter. I could maybe grow food?

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd choose to stay, but I'd definitely want to know what the situation really was. If I had to choose between living ignorantly in the Matrix or leaving the Matix, I'd probably choose to leave, even though it would majorly suck.

Can I bring someone with me, or tell them about the truth? If so, I would leave. If not, I don't think I could leave everyone/everything I've ever known and loved.

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's a significant difference between being the Matrix and real life, so whichever one seemed like a nicer place to live I guess

Re: Important Question

(Anonymous) 2019-06-17 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Leave because this simulated reality I'm currently living in sucks. Now, if you were to give me one where I was fabulously wealthy, good looking and healthy, and also had a loving partner to share it all with then I might consider staying, even though aware that it's all merely an illusion.

Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
So I know we've had a lot of discussion here in the past about commenting, if there's such a thing as a bad comment that's not actually rude, comments vs kudos, etc.
But I wanted to ask for the comm's feelings on creator responses. How much does it matter to you if a creator responds to your comment? Are you happy to engage a little more, or do you suspect they're just inflating their comment numbers? Have you ever had a bad reaction to a comment? Or one that made you particularly happy?

Re: Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't even expect anyone to answer me anymore these days, let alone an author. Actually, my social awkwardness is so bad that even when they answer I won't dare check it out. I'm... just happy to have read the fic, enjoyed it, and squeed on it?

I think it is nice when an author responds. I always try to respond to reviews on my works just so the reviewers know I appreciate that they took the time to review.

Re: Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
When an author responds to every comment, of every length, with "Thanks for reading!", there's a bitchy part of me that thinks they're just inflating the comment count, but in all probability they're just doing what they think is polite.
I usually don't comment unless I've got something to say, so it sort of annoys me when I feel like the author didn't even read my comment? Like, come on! It's only 100-150 words, can't you spare the time? :c

Re: Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been a while, but we've also had a lot of discussion here about ungrateful creators who don't deserve comments because they don't respond. And that's fair.

I respond to all comments on newer fics because I'm so damn happy to be sharing what I'm feeling at that moment in time. I'm just as thrilled to get comments on older fics, and sometimes they inspire me to revisit ideas or spark new ideas, but I am admittedly slack in responding to those comments. Usually I've moved on and don't have much enthusiasm for the piece anymore or maybe even feel a little too embarrassed by it to respond. And I get that people don't comment to older fics for that reason, and that's fine. But FWIW, I cherish them just as much as comments to newer fic. Maybe even more because of how rare they are, and how they tend to come out of the blue.

It makes me anxious when I've put time and thought into a comment and I don't get a response. I start wondering if I somehow offended them.

Re: Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm fine whether a creator responds to my comment or not. It's nice, but not required. But I could also see the argument that it's better to be gracious and respond to as many folks who took the time to read/view/listen to/experience your work. I'm okay with engaging more if they like, and it never occurred to me that a creator responding is only doing so because they want to inflate their comment numbers. No on those last two questions.

Re: Fanwork commenting

(Anonymous) 2019-06-16 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I once commented to ask a writer to stop marking things as updated when they, in fact, were not, and they got *real* fuckin' huffy. It was basically all the self-important fanficcer clichés at once - how dare you, sweat of my brow, I slave all day over a hot keyboard, no appreciation, blah blah blah.

So I deleted their comment from my inbox, unfollowed their fic, and moved on.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If a writer wants to make out like writing fic is a huge burden and imposition, then I'm probably gonna avoid their work.

When has Fandom Helped you in Real Life

[personal profile] ill_omened 2019-06-16 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
At work I was shown a new programme to convert CCTV and Video files that nobody really knows how to use, but is key for sorting a compilation into a playable format.

Turns out it's the exact same programme I use to convert all my anime into a playable format for my TV. Having struggled with all kind of bizarre and finicky formats from rips of shows from the eighties, I'm quite adept with it.

Explaining to my boss why I'm so conversant with it, and that I could run the office through how to use it was quite the challenge.
