Or they were sincerely wrong. Or AYRT is sincerely wrong. Or AYRT is flat-out lying.

I don't know how a reviewer could be sincerely wrong in stating that they personally read the novels and that's how they know the novels say Kino is nonbinary.

The reviewer could have sincerely misinterpreted the novels.

As someone who interpreted Kino as genderless in the old anime, if not the books (funnily enough), it could be a sincere mistake!!
It was all that responding that she’s a traveller if anyone asks anythinf about her identity and finding both boy and girl “embarrassing” to be called, also the anime-only(?) scene where she’s trying out different ways of saying I (atashi, watashi, boku) to match her new name.

I really thought that’s what they were aiming for, although Kino largely doesn’t care either way. Book Kino just feels like female, but not going to correct anyone who assumes otherwise.
