I think there was another scene in the following episode during a fight that also went similarly, so two conversations over two episodes.
That made a big impression on me at the time. Of course, they translated that differently in the dub and the dub was *definitely* Kino as female, but I watched the sub back then so didn't know that and assumed Kino was non-binary (particular when somewhat reinforced with the 'watashi, atashi, boku" scene in the OAV of Kino trying out the femininity/masculinity of the 'I' that worked with the name Kino best.)
Which is not to say that you can't interpret Kino as female! The '03 dub definitely did so anyone who just watched that probably did to, and I haven't read the books so I have no idea how they portrayed it. But I think it's also perfectly fine to think of Kino as non binary. Both are valid interpretations, though it depends on the translation a person consumed.
