Changing trivial background details isn't quite as big of a deal as changing the race of a character though, is it?

When it literally has no impact on her character, the plot, or anything else, yeah it is.

I felt this particular change was there for representation, and I was entirely fine with that.

No, they're equivalent changes. Pepper being white in the book had precisely as much impact on anything as the Bentley having a cassette player. Possibly less, because it wasn't the source of a joke.
