Pepper and Madame Tracy were the best characters in the whole thing. I wouldn't change a thing about them.

Now, while Gaiman was changing things, he could have made Shadwell stop calling Tracy a whore every two seconds. That would have been great. Really great. Jesus. I wanted Shadwell to drop fucking dead.

Yeah, I found it difficult to see what Tracy liked about him.

Shadwell works so much better in the book, because you see why people don't mind his abuse*, and in Madame Tracy's case sometimes sees it as free advertising.

Not that I like him in the book either, but I can see how he works better in the book.

*As written by two white straight men who've never had that abuse thrown at them.

AYRT

It would take a lot more than clever jokes and advertising to make abuse toward sex workers okay. But then again it was 20 years ago. That's why I don't understand why Gaiman didn't take the opportunity to change it, especially since it simply doesn't work, as you said, in this medium. Shadwell just looks like an abusive dick, which is why it makes even less sense that Tracy makes him a dinner date and offers to share her life savings...earned in the sex work he vilified so.

Repulsive.
