I haven't seen the new anime, but the problem with Tohru in the manga, I think, is that most of her character development happens in the final 20% of the story. It makes her look dull among characters who get a lot of development from the beginning.

SPOILER for Tohru's character ending!:

The fact that Tohru's optimism and positivity comes from an extreme fear of abandonment and rejection, was something the manga explained pretty late. I get that it was one of the stories 'big reveals', but it didn't help Tohru's character in most of the story.

I personally really like Tohru as a character, but I liked her better when I re-read the manga, knowing her full background, than I did reading it for the first time.

I really love Tohru, and agree that she's a stronger character on a reread, but the manga does go into how she hates being alone several times over the course of the story. The characters themselves don't realize how deep it runs, but Tohru's aching fear of abandonment is foreshadowed throughout the series.

I thought this too. I was surprised when people told me it was meant to a reveal. For the other characters, it's meant to be a big reveal, but I thought for the reader it was a pretty clear thing? Even in the original anime, I felt like there were some pretty big hints that Tohru had severe abandonment issues.

yeah, I just wandered by to mention that having only ever watched uh...most but not all? of the original anime, I was pretty clear in episode 1 that she had major abandonment issues. this was supposed to be a big reveal?

Nah, it isn't clear other than if you look at her life circumstances, you would surmise that someone in that situation would naturally have abandonment issues. That might be why it was easy to ignore the fact that Tohru as a person doesn't show any signs of having abandonment issues, even though she should. Your mind just fills in the blanks with what makes sense despite it not actually being there.
