I have weird feelings about Tohru. I want to like her because she is a sweetheart and all, but I tend to feel mostly meh towards her. I only felt something other than indifference towards her near the end of the manga because she did some neat things, but yeah. I definitely agree that the Sohmas and all their personal drama was more interesting than Tohru, but that's a problem that's not unique to Fruits Basket. Twilight's another series that has a similar problem because everybody's way more interesting than Bella and Edward.

It feels most romances are just like that though, characaters better eachother and they get together afterwards hahahaha, I actually find her not that bad, many anime heroines (and heroes) are one dimensional to appeal to the common denominator of kids and adults. Like "this is you. This is the world you're in now." The other characters are meant to be more interesting and that's what's meant to make the viewer want to watch the show or read the books, in my exp anyway xP

I haven't seen the new anime, but the problem with Tohru in the manga, I think, is that most of her character development happens in the final 20% of the story. It makes her look dull among characters who get a lot of development from the beginning.

SPOILER for Tohru's character ending!:

The fact that Tohru's optimism and positivity comes from an extreme fear of abandonment and rejection, was something the manga explained pretty late. I get that it was one of the stories 'big reveals', but it didn't help Tohru's character in most of the story.

I personally really like Tohru as a character, but I liked her better when I re-read the manga, knowing her full background, than I did reading it for the first time.

Oml i remember reading that when i was 13 and my mind was blown like "this is the dark secret of tohru honda... wow..!!!"

I really love Tohru, and agree that she's a stronger character on a reread, but the manga does go into how she hates being alone several times over the course of the story. The characters themselves don't realize how deep it runs, but Tohru's aching fear of abandonment is foreshadowed throughout the series.

I thought this too. I was surprised when people told me it was meant to a reveal. For the other characters, it's meant to be a big reveal, but I thought for the reader it was a pretty clear thing? Even in the original anime, I felt like there were some pretty big hints that Tohru had severe abandonment issues.

yeah, I just wandered by to mention that having only ever watched uh...most but not all? of the original anime, I was pretty clear in episode 1 that she had major abandonment issues. this was supposed to be a big reveal?

Nah, it isn't clear other than if you look at her life circumstances, you would surmise that someone in that situation would naturally have abandonment issues. That might be why it was easy to ignore the fact that Tohru as a person doesn't show any signs of having abandonment issues, even though she should. Your mind just fills in the blanks with what makes sense despite it not actually being there.

Watching the show as an adult she's a lot less compelling, but also watching as someone who knows the manga and more about what was revealed later...there's a lot of small nuances that you can catch.

Well, she is a “rice ball.”

Pretty much. I guess that's why the show appealed to me so much when I was a teenager, but now I just find Tohru to be a really bland wish fulfilment character.

My feelings about this have been buried, albeit building, for well over a decade now... So I'll heap another bucket of sand on them, and just say...
I /really/ detest Tohru... Always have, always will.

The reason a lot of main characters are kinda bland in anime/manga is because they're supposed to be a stand-in for the reader/viewer. If they have too much personality it's harder to place yourself in their shoes.

Some are worse than others, so whether this is what they were aiming for with Tohru, who knows.

I do like that she doesn't end up with Yuki though. That would be way to cliche.
