Since when does Canada copy everything the US does? They certainly don't now. They very much are a much more liberal, progressive place than the current US is. So I don't think it is that much of a stretch.

The Ford brothers.

The Ford brothers, Rob (mayor of Toronto until just before his death) and Doug (current premier of Ontario), are (were) basically low(er)-rent Donald Trump.

The opinion in the secret is still laughably wrong*, just explaining how these two morons fit the narrative.

* Like...I mean, opponents of Premier Ford point out that he's pointing too much toward American style crap...and even he's not willing to openly advocate stuff like defunding OHIP.

The difference being, in Canada the Ford brothers are outliers. And they don't get elected president.

Wh-? Oh, I'm sorry, I was distracted by reading about Canada's long history as a destination for people fleeing slavery in the US... which I'm sure is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand! :)

(Anonymous) 2019-06-29 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
i know, right? This is almost troll-level absurd.

Oh, yeah.

Canada, with their publicly funded health care system and federal marijuana legalization and streamlining of immigration to make it easier, is just like the US and would never go in a different direction. Oh, wait...

Re: Oh, yeah.

Uh, Canada's immigration policies are in no way easier or less strict than the US. In fact, they're the opposite: it's much, MUCH harder to immigrate to Canada than it is to the US.

Source: one of my Canadian friends married a British guy. The process to get him through immigration was a pain in the ass.

It's harder to get permanent residency here, which is generally what people who are immigrating to marry are going for. The process of applying for temporary residency, particularly as a refugee, is much simpler.

Views like this frustrates me.

It makes people hold up countries as an ideal as response and ends up feeling like it's dismissing the real concerns minorities in those countries are facing, because hey, at least you guys have it better than elsewhere!!

Ah, but there's federal marijuana legalization, don't you know?

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
See, I don’t know about other countries vs Canada, but in a US vs Canada fight Canada certainly wins the “more progressive” award for generally treating refugees better and having a much saner and kinder healthcare system. The reason they don’t lose points compared to the US on their treatment of their indigenous population is that the US treats theirs just as poorly, if not worse.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Canada is more progressive than the United States but that does not make it a progressive wonderland where regressive policies never can dwell.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT—of course, but if Canada metaphorically has to deal with the occasional smell of shit from a busted sewer pipe compared to the US where the shit and sewage flows down an open trench in the middle of the street, people from the US (raises hand) can still be impressed because omg, you don’t have to see turds floating down the road and sometimes you can’t even smell shit? Paradise!

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is the problem. It unintentionally downplays the issues different populations are dealing with because at least it's not as bad as x country.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
It's a matter of just because your problems are less severe than someone else's doesn't mean you get to pretend your problems don't exist. There are countries the US could win the fight against but the turds would still be there.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
The secret was pretty specific about how laughable it is that Canada wouldn't follow the US and I think people pointing out the specific instances where Canada didn't, is a pretty good argument to make. Whether the country is ideal or not is not at all the point.

(Anonymous) 2019-06-30 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? As a Canadian, our country is not even close to perfect, but pointing out x, y, and z where we do the opposite things isn't a non-sensical 'rainbow' response to the secret.

Well, there was that episode where Canada decided to have trade relations with Gilead and the Waterfords visited Canada. And Luke and Moira made the letters from the Handmaids go viral and they were so horrible that it ended that idea.

I'm not sure the geopolitical situation in the show stands up to close scrutiny but not really because of Canada.

Also keep in mind that the entire US didn't just vote and become Gilead. So it's not like there was some sweeping social change that only happened in the U.S. It was a military takeover by one particular group and the war is still being fought as far east as Chicago. (Though I don't know if Chicago is still officially part of the U.S., since the U.S. government seems to be hiding out in Alaska.)
